Description
After a long and satisfying life, I'm ready to kick back and enjoy the afterlife. It's going to be perfect—a familiar home where family and friends are always around, where laughter fills the air, and the food is endless. Heaven, right?
But apparently, someone forgot to check the “Do Not Disturb” sign on my eternal rest. The next thing I know, I’ve been yanked out of my eternal reunion and dropped into a cursed body known as VAL.
Now I’m stuck in a bizarre world where I don’t belong, bouncing between the living and the afterlife dimensions, trying to figure out how to end this nonsense.
I just want to get back to my perfect afterlife, a quiet eternity! Instead, I’m getting the adventure I never asked for, dealing with otherworldly monsters, impossible moral dilemmas, secrets, conspiracy, power struggles, and sci-fi civilizations that defy the imagination.
Turns out, the afterlife isn’t exactly what I thought it was.
Who knew resting in peace could be so complicated?

- Ana87Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Excuse Me, I Was Trying to Rest in Peace! is an intriguing novel with fresh elements that distinguish it within the isekai genre. In this case, the protagonist's soul is trapped in an experiment by Dr. Keyser, which ends up leading him on a crazy adventure trying to return to rest in peace with his family.
The plot develops slowly but the mysteries it proposes are enough to hold the reader's attention. In the first five chapters there are not many moments of action but the discovery of the world and the gradual revelation of Dr. Keyser's experiments are enough to hook you in. His encounter with Bailey opens up a range of possibilities for the story and the secrets hidden in this new world. The first chapter begins with a summary of the protagonist's life and then turns into a wild ride in the following chapters.
The story is written in a fluid and light tone. Some moments of humor soften the dramatic events. The grammar is solid and there are no glaring errors to distract the author's attention.
The first few chapters focus mostly on Val. It is very easy to empathize with him because of his situation. After a long and fulfilling life, he simply wants to rest in peace with his loved ones, but instead of that he gets dragged into an experiment by accident. But that's not his only problem because, due to the nature of his new artificial body, imbued with powers as well, his life, and probably his soul, will be threatened by unknown forces to be revealed later, which generates a good dose of tension in the coming of future events.
I recommend this novel for Isekai fantasy fans looking for something original and with unexpected twists. It promises an entertaining read with lots of exploration of the new world and the gradual revelation of its secrets. - Kyous KoonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story starts off great. Just at the start of the story, the MC is already true to the title, he just wants to rest in peace, literally. MC's ability is rather unique, allowing you to view the story from another perspective. At first, it might be slightly confusing, but the more you read, the more how much it made sense. Each chapter is paced nicely, so you won't feel too long or too short.
Overall, it's a good story! Thanks for sharing it! - ZayricRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just finished reading the prologue, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.
What an intense rollercoaster of emotions!!!
First of all, I love the isekai genre so I am a little biased towards these kind of stories, but having said that, this was just so damn good.
The story is well written, well paced in my opinion, and pulls you in.
The prologue was very deceptive to start with it. I felt like I was reading a very wholesome story, and it gave me the impression that this would be a bit of a 'slice of life' kind of story. No, I was wrong. Chapter two immediately introduces questions, and lots of them. Who is Val, Why does Val exist and should Val even exist?
This leads on to a fun premise, 'A thousand different ways to die', or so I hope.
This isn't the end of it though. The author gives you an insight into the Val's superpowers/abilities, one of which is reading the memories of the recently deceased. Such a clever twist. At first, I had no idea what was happening and why this was a useful power, however, by the end of chapter 2, I wanted to cry. I felt sorry for the aggressive sea serpents.
This is what a story should do; pull you in and turn everything you know on its head.
Loved it. - GodOfZapRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story is exceptionally well written and the main character in this becomes relatable quickly. The pacing is engaging making me wanna not to stop and continue reading more. However, I found the chapter titles to be a refreshing change after seeing long chapter in many this titles give a unique touch to the reader's experience when visiting this fiction page.
- ICEdingerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A novel idea for an Isekai. The main character wants to return to the afterlife that he was rudely interrupted from enjoying by a mad scientist character. Breakdown:
Style 4.5/5: The style works well for this kind of story. The first-person POV gives us the inner monologue of the main character who finds themselves in a nigh-indestructible body. The story also has plenty of fast-paced action sequences without wasting much time on exposition.
Story 5/5: A very interesting concept for an Isekai. Usually, being Isekai'd is considered purely a good thing, but this character wishes that they had been allowed to enjoy the afterlife instead of being thrust into a fantasy world they didn't ask for. I love it!
Grammar 5/5: I did not notice any mistakes at the time of writing this review. However, I am not a professional editor.
Character 4/5: I found the MC a little hard to relate to, but they have an interesting motivation that was fresh. Interesting setup and I'm sure the cast will become more interesting as the story progresses.
Overall 4.5/5: The concept is unique and interesting and the MC is unlike the typical Isekai protagonist. The pacing is quick, so if you want to get right into the action, this is perfect for you. I really like the concept and am excited to see where it will go. - Pens&KeysRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story has an interesting design to it. I do not believe I have read one quite like it. The MC is pretty neutral as far as personality goes.
The story is written well, a little slow paced. However the influx of emotions can easily keep your attention.
Overall it’s written very well and definitely has an interesting perspective.
