This story seems like one of many, but it is definitely not. Every chapter and every character is multidimensional. One can feel their development and understand their reasoning and feelings without it being on the nose..
The magic and social systems are well explained as are the other aspects of world-building.
Two different types of magic users evokers and spellcasters are present in this world. Both few in numbers with evokers being even rarer. That makes those in power very interested in them as a resource for power. And awakening a more than life changing event.
Starting of very young the MC and his mother are taken to live with their local lord, who is unlike the much used prejudice a very nice and fatherly figure... now the MC has to learn in which he is excellent. But still has to work and stays humble.
