What to Expect:
Cozy LitRPG vibes.
Gideon learns new magic and levels up over time. Numbers go up, but that isn't the focus of the story.

- ZarinthelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is very new, but I gave it a shot and really liked what I've read so far. The characters are charming and vibrant, the dialogue gives characterization and information without feeling like you're being buried under a rockslide of unimportant details, and the main character himself has a lot of heart.
In terms of plot, we're still very early stages, but the premise has been very clearly laid out: turn the castle into a Bed in Breakfast, and eventually turn our young mage into a powerful sorceror.
Litrpg elements are present but not overwhelming. Give it a shot! - Antares905Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A comedic story that isn't bogged down by flowery writing. Short, sweet, and to the point. I have only read three chapters so there's still much to sift through, but I'm enjoying myself so far. I love how the characters are written and the main character isn't a bore, and I look forward to meeting the rest of the cast.
- CreatureDukeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I came into this story not expecting too much but it has made me laugh and I'm smiling as I write this review.
This is a story about trying something new, finding a fresh face, new ideas and a new place. This experience brought the realisation that your old job, home and environment really weren't as good as you tried to convince yourself it was.
I love the characters though it feels criminal how little we know about everyone so far. The author's hook has sunk deep and I crave more. An interesting world that we can only see glimpses of as our MC is trying to live a more rural and slow lifestyle.
I can only say I wish I had more chapters so I could say how fun and amazing this story is but it still feels like it's only touching the beginning.
Everyone should give this a read. Expect a warming and funny story with the potential to become something that brings you joy to read for life. - RainHarlowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a heartwarming — no, really! — tale of delightfully colorful necromantic minions, a necromancer stuck in a precarious (and fascinating) scenario, and our protagonist, Gideon, his distant relative thrust into their midst thanks to machinations you’ll certainly want to read and enjoy yourself.
The brand of ‘evil’ you’ll find here is the sardonically amusing variety, delivered in a balanced way with authentic, novel characterizations. You’ll see this immediately as the first two characters (a skeleton and an animated suit of armor) make a bet on a certain someone surviving his trip up to the mountaintop and the castle. I wanted to know more about every significant character almost continuously throughout my reading because the writer drapes them in uniqueness and likeability like they’re pouring it from a ladle as they work. It just drips off of them.
Magical problem-solving is consistently a key plot point for our protagonist, an earth magic user, as is a progression with spells. He learns as he goes, helping those around him often in the process. He comes from a background of boring, drudgery work as a minor spellcaster, with an overbearing douchebag of a boss. Definitely read for how that ends up!
It’s all delivered with, as I said, a sardonic style and a balance of taking things seriously enough without taking things too seriously. The writing is crisp and easy as pie to read. Grammar is entirely a non-concern in my reading, as well.
Wonderfully funny and intriguing, and absolutely worth giving a read just about whoever you are, because this is just plain fun.
And Sir Clonk is my absolute favorite! - Uri ArmokRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So needless to say I really enjoyed this one, but as the critic says - and I'm paraphrasing from the book
"..4.5 stars, what! There's room for improvement."
The author really tells you a lot about the world and setting without throwing a big wordy infodump at you, which to me is a sign of solid writing.
The characters were... I won't say alive - but real. The people Gideon meets and interacts with aren't just npc #7. Even his loan shark is a family man putting his kids through school.
The pacing, I feel, was perfect. We gradually learn more about all the denizens of and the mysterious history surrounding this haunted dilapidated former resort/castle/wizards lair built on ancient mysteries of power.
Story was great. I super enjoyed the little details, they really made it come alive. Like, of course the townsfolk know about the spooky castle. They also know the woods are infested with horrible spiders so you don't go up there!
The system, ahhh systems. Im not a huge fan of systems, they can be a crutch and a deux ex machina solution for whatever obstacles you face. The system in this more just tells you what you already know it doesn't really give the mc much(if anything). I liked how minor it was to the story
The first few chapters diddnt really grab me but the first chapter did make me think I should give this a read. With a slice of life style, starting can be a bit of a challenge to get a really good hook. But the ending, no spoilers but I think it was extremely well done and leaves me wanting to read book two!
I read a few other reviews and I have to say - ouch. You should come back and read the rest.
Last thoughts... cause I can't wait for book two.
"Help wanted - staff needed for an enchanting experience at 'The Last Rest'. All positions available, previous experience dealing with nobility is a plus. Unique personality and strong will score recommended." - AnehaliaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a wonderful, charming slice of life following a young man who inherits a castle from his undead uncle. The svelte writing and the soft humor carry this story along on its journey to whatever location it goes to.
The writing style was simple but descriptive. I had a good idea of everything happening and what the locations and characters looked like without being bogged down by superfluous descriptions. There was a light touch of humor and peace woven into the words that made this a fun and relaxing read.
I debated the story store between 4.5 and 5 because this is a slice of life with no promise of any grand plot other than running an inn in a haunted castle. I decided on a 4.5 because while I'm greatly enjoying the story being told, it is a slice of life going along at its own pace without any great "story" to carry it, but that is also what makes it so fun and enjoyable. I'm not sure where this is heading, but I'm here for the ride wherever it goes.
I saw no grammar flaws that interrupted my peaceful reading of this tale.
The characters were fun and interesting. It's been fun seeing the protagonist break the entombment around his mind of the everyday drudgery in a magic world to imagine knew ways to use his abilities. The inhabitants of the castle are also a fun cast of characters.
I've genuinely enjoyed reading this, and I look forward to continuing reading as new chapters are published. - Dexterous BaronessRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am really enjoying this story. The characters are well written and fun and the plot feels fresh and creative.
Honestly, I felt obligated to write this review after reading the latest update, deciding that I enjoyed reading it so much that I wanted to give it a five star rating, only to find that at some point in the past I already had and had forgotten! - Domovie1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Good story, a bit of comedy, and some intrigue that I'm not sure about.
I like the way that magic and levels are presented. God save us from the [Low Mana Warning], it will be the end of us all.
My only modest suggestion would be more development/detail of the castle and spaces around; I feel somewhat at a loss on the mental image of the space. - Elena-RavenwoodRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There's darker undertone to the stories, but overall it is lighthearted. The characters are fleshed out really well, and the MC with all his baggage is depicted as someone much more than just "poor". The main cast are all solid, and due the nature of their "race" makes the story even more interesting. I love the little quirks and how the author write it. They are layered, not just a simple string of letters saying he likes this, he do this, he hates this. It's being revealed one at a time.
My only complain is, the last chapter i've read is when the inn was welcoming its first customer. Such a cliffhanger! - Homeless_OneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Our main character receives a letter that he's inherited and ancient castle, but it seems the castle is haunted by shockingly non-murderous (though opinionated) undead. I greatly enjoy the various interactions with the cast as our helpless Main Character finds a way to fit in and repair the dilapidated castle. From magical lessons to incredibly good pie, MC feels as if he's finally living his life, free from loan sharks and abusive employers. Can't wait for the next chapter!
