- Polvane the EraserRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Once upon a time and long ago, a planet got a visitor from outer space offering them free and very useful robots.
Matt lives with his father Jonas away from everyone else. His father has a robot. Everyone else his age and older has a robot. Except for Matt, who desperately wants a robot, and yet Jonas seems oddly reluctant to help him get a robot.
But teenage boys have their needs, and so Matt and Jonas go to get Matt's robot. They are rebuffed. Apparently the local officials create barriers to getting a robot, preventing undesirables from availing themselves of this privilege.
Then Jonas leads Matt to this place in the middle of nowhere, where he can get a robot without stupid guards telling him no. Stupid guards show up and tragedy strikes. But Matt does get a robot. A really weird one that doesn't look like or do anything like the other robots he's seen.
Characterization: Matt seems kinda 2-dimensional or even 1-dimensional? His main motivation seems to be getting a cool robot. Oh well, he's a teenager, I can't remember being that thoughtful at that age either. Plus he and his father never really talked much. Both introverts I guess.
Setting: Weird. I've never seen the terms Brownie-Fey and robot occur in the same page, and yet here we are. It's a cultivation with robots story featuring magical creatures. That's what makes it interesting and innovative.
Also there are definite hints of depth, especially political depth, in the story. Why are there gatekeepers to getting a robot? Were they good reasons or evil reasons? What is the true reason why free robots were offered to the planet's inhabitants in the first place? What kind of robot did Matt's long-disappeared mother get?
Plot: Interesting. This story is clearly about learning the truth of things. Matt's robot gives him information. I like it.
