Book I of the dark fantasy novel seriesLand of the Silent Ones

Once united to create a fragile equilibrium against the king, three great houses – the Vargas, Strouts, and Anroths – turn against each other in a bitter struggle for dominance. At the center of this conflict is Magdala Varga, the calculating matriarch who seeks to increase her influence through blackmail and cunning schemes. But her actions unleash consequences that even she can’t control.

As her son Michail starts to investigate his uncle Jeremy Anroth’s murder, he gets ensnared in a turbulent game of submission and desire. As he delves deeper into this treacherous landscape, the lines between right and wrong become blurred, leaving him questioning his own moral compass.

Meanwhile, young lady Amelie Strout finds herself being targeted by a false rumor tarnishing her reputation and destroying her happiness. And as if that wasn't enough, she finds out that her family is on the brink of ruin. However, she is met with indifference from her father and brother upon warning them. With only her loyal servant Celine by her side, she tries to navigate through the turmoil of family strife and the menace of her unknown personal enemy.

As their paths converge, alliances are to be shifted and loyalties tested. But who will ultimately get an upper hand? Can they influence the outcome, or are they mere pawns in the never-ending game of ancient beings beyond their understanding?

An atmospheric, slow burn, supernatural-tinged mystery. Michail Varga is called to investigate his uncle's mysterious death. There are shades of Dark Souls-style decay: the world feels as if it's falling into disrepair, and the walls of conspiracy are closing in steadily, and things are better left dead and undisturbed. You get the feeling things have been meddled with, things that should never have been touched.
MIchail is armed and ready, but doesn't know what he's getting into, and that sense of duty and care against a world full of danger and lies makes for an interesting clash.
There are some perspective swaps and an interesting cast of characters, both of the extended family and peasantry, and hints at the greater cosmos of the setting. Strong recommend!

It held my attention. It sets out to track a number of characters, and I think they were successfully defined for me. The writing is (I'm assuming) deliberately indulgent, although I found it restrained enough. Facts and ideas are occasionally summarized but at a lower frequency I think, and in many cases I did not feel as though my experience was especially hindered.
It's a short read at the moment and it felt to me as though the author has a particular artistic objective in mind. I think this works to the story's benefit. I liked it!!!
