Summary:

Tendil Bascombe is a Human and he's reminded of it at every turn. Working as a trade negotiator for the notorious Hard Coast Company, his job is to secure the lucrative amber concession on offer from the reclusive Gray Elves in their forest home deep in the ancient Taliswood.

He must compete against other Elves, the hyena-headed Gnolls of the Western Waste, and Swalesian slavers from the South. He must survive assassination attempts and war while navigating a world of palace intrigue, treachery, magic, and romance.

He's in over his head, but does he have the fortitude to rise to the occasion? Will pluck and charm be enough to see him through, or will he need to dig to find more within himself?

This is a slow-burn, noblebright tale in the high fantasy tradition. It's a story involving rich character development and immersive world building as our protagonist climbs the ladder from mortal to much more. Along the way, there's love, deception, friendship, and growth.

Elves of the Taliswood pull you into a world that feels lived-in, with a deep history between elves and humans. It takes a little time to get into the flow, especially if you’re not familiar with the series, but once the pieces start coming together, it gets pretty interesting because I, for one is a sucker for a rich worldbuilding
What I liked most was that the elves aren’t just the usual mystical, all-knowing beings, they have struggles, politics, and real stakes. The writing is descriptive without being over-the-top, and you can tell the author has put a lot of thought into the world. That said, the beginning isn’t exactly fast-paced, so if you’re looking for instant action, this might not hook you right away.
Overall, it feels like it’s setting up for something big. If you like fantasy with detailed world-building and tension that builds over time, it seems like a solid start.

This first chapter reminded me of classic Tolkien, in a good way. The exposition and worldbuilding is supported by a fantastic quality of prose that makes the whole thing a very cozy, very classical read. Honestly, Greer's story of his dealings as a delegate of the Hard Coast Company will be very, very interesting. I love political, mercantile stories like these that take their time with establishing the world, the setting, all the different races and kingdoms to come. If done by a different, less skilled author, I don't think any of these elements would work well in a first chapter. But really, it doesn't feel like an exposition dump. It feels like an exploration or a journal log of a great big beautiful fantasy realm that we are getting primed to explore with Greer. I'm extremely excited for this story: if you like Tolkien, Tad Williams, or even anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, I'm sure this will greatly appeal to you!
