- 1212BRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5"Eldrich Blade" presents us with a world where humans have been relegated to a sidenote in history by demons, scampering to survive in the resource barren lands which the demons consider more trouble than they're worth.
Our main character — a naïve and weak farm boy — dreams of becoming like his father, and does get a chance to, as his village is attacked and makes a pact with the sword and the entity within it, which his father sacrificed his career to seal and keep hidden.
I really like this premise. I also enjoyed the hard limit on the tokens our main character can use to gain an edge in a fight.
But the story itself... So far I am unconvinced.
Style / Grammar:
I could find no grammatical mistakes or typos to speak of, barring a singular tense slip-up, which made me stumble while reading.
The style... I feel it changed a bit throughout the chapters. The first chapter is just 100% dry exposition, the action packed afterwards predominantly dialogue.
In more recent chapters it feels like the prose has found a good balance between the two.
The fight scenes work decently, though every time DND terms are brought up, or dice rolls are mentioned, I am a bit taken out of the immesion. Personal preference and biases and all.
In general, the writing feels a bit... Dry. I don't think it evoked an emotion in my a single time during reasing, though I believe the story ans characters are responsible for that in part.
There is a span of chapters where the perspective switched rapidly, which I also thought was a but jarring. Especially since the tone in those perspectives was quite different.
Story / Characters:
As it stands, our story is mostly driven by our main character's desire to become stronger, to follow in his father's footsteps.
The conflicts that have occurred so far have mostly been resolved within a few chapters. They are introduced as quickly as they are resolved and since most of them didn't really have any personal connection to the main character I didn't have an
