Dungeon Corps

Description

The Great Evil has both won and had absolute victory snatched from their jaws. Our world has ended, yet what has been made after is free from its machinations and was allowed to develop as its own thing.

The initial concept came literally after watching net narrator do a reading of a HFY story on reddit about a guy that got isekai'd into being a dungeon followed shortly by me binging the eighty or hundred some odd chapters ahead of what NN did. the first few chapters were fairly easy; introduce the dungeon, ome supporting cast regulars, a few odds and ends sorts of finding its feet.

This arc has turned from me just me-to'ing a genre (Dungeon Core) into me memorializing a friend I lost right at about the start of covid, as well as excorcising the demons from perhaps the most toxic game group with literally the worst DM I'd ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

And yet, there was still positive there. Even at its worst there were still moments of genuine fun to be had and value that made me hang on, and even after I left the group I kept touch with Ishida, which is where we remained friends for the next decade.

I'm not a fan of spite writing 'raaah i hate this thing so I will burn it in effigy by portraying it as weak and stupid.' No. that's a toxic as hell attitude to have, and instead I wanted to find the good that was there and tell a story based around the group, how it fell apart, and how out of them I was basically the last man standing in spite of it all.

So.

No shit, there I was...

I was surprised so many times by this story.  Not the least of the surprises was its connection to the authors real life and history. An allegory of a dark period of BlindGuy's actual gaming life. The tale seems to illustrate pain and doubts that remain from that time. Throughout the story, and especially  the ending, forgiveness is an ongoing theme. Or I'm just projecting. I loved the plot, the inventiveness and interpersonal relationships. He, the author, openly agonizes in the notes about his writing style and story holes. I love his style and didn't feel like any of the plot was "clunky". He would be alot less stressed if he used Grammerly to automate and clean up spelling and syntax errors. (Like who wouldn't?) I not an author and this ones opinions are probably BS. I am really just trying to say that I enjoyed the story very much. It was exciting and emotional. It's engaging and does require active reading in some parts. I mean you have to pay attention! It's not all spoon fed to you. That's part of what makes this novel worth reading. Take care and thanks to the author. The two hundred word requirement for a review is why RoyalRoad doesn't get many reviews! Blind Guy sweat blood a shed tears writing this story I am sure. It's evidenced by the quality of the story that he went through many re-writes to get to the places he wanted to go.  With the added stress of his friends and acquaintances perhaps seeing themselves on the page. Bless me, I think I'm there now? As I said,  I'm not a writer. Peace to BlindGuyandKarr, I hope to see more of your stories in future. Sincerely, Jim L.
