- BleedingTearsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Dungeon Apoc has your classic things-go-wrong beginning that all good system apoc stories have, and that's a plus. It all starts with a bang, and once you're hooked, you're gonna keep reading it. What I like in MC's in these system apoc stories is their proactivity, and we have here a MC who clearly has the girlfriend-problems buff, and that means things are gonna get serious.
Give it a try, and thank me later. Cheers! - Dominick RRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Adrenaline to the veins, spear in hand, and magic at my fingertips. An explosive start to a new series from a favorite author and I'm just mad I have to wait for more chapters. First person POV, male MC, mage and close quarters fighting, an interesting setting and fresh new enemy Combatants! There's a fire here that will have to be quenched with the blood of his foes.
Character: Zane is a bold and loud New Yorker who picked a bad day to take a vacation. Love the energy, the self assurance, and take charge attitude.
Story: familiar tropes thrown into a blender with different takes, blending classes, rankings, and quests into a new but familiar System.
Grammar: nothing egregious stands out. Periods, capitalization, quotations are all I need and that's delivered
Style: First person POV narrator. If you don't like first person, well, you're warned. A gritty fast paced style that emphasizes actions and the surroundings.
Story: it's a little early to tell but I'm in love. Fighting, setting, class, enemies, all of it have a charisma that has me entranced. The humor is there and while not emphasized leaves a powerful impression against the bloody world. Absolutely fantastic and I can't wait to read more. - FiddlesoupRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't know about you, but when I'm reading a LitRPG, three things need to stick out to me to make the story special.
One: the characters. If I don't like your MC or relate to them in some way, I don't read.
Two: The system. It needs to be fun or at least feel game-like. This one immediately clicked with me and has the kinds of things I enjoy in a LitRPG. It has multiple classes, a random element, a bestiary, and of course, stats. Who doesn't love stats? The stats here are simple and aren't repeated ad nauseam, which is great.
Three: A unique element that makes it stand out. And starting on a cruise is a clever idea. I really loved the start and the setting.
For the second time in a row, Reece has exceeded expectations. Dare I say that I am enjoying this more than I did Iron Blooded? I am honestly excited to continue reading this one.
Style: Action is in your face and fun. Spears, sand magic, intelligent fighting despite the panicked characters. It is an enjoyable romp.
Story: Right off the bat, this system integration starts off uniquely and flies into the familiar beats with some unique takes. Starting a system apoc on a cruise ship is simultaneously hilarious and claustrophobic. It's a great mix. And then the five-year fight to save humanity with promises of a wider universe is a good take on the average schtick. The fact that only 3 humans out of 7 billion get to be the system-appointed best is ripe for future tension.
Characters: You immediately feel for Zade, and he seems like a good dude despite a questionable past that is alluded to in a couple of chapters. One of my power fantasies is being a hero and saving people, which there is not enough of in the LitRPG world with so many loners that just care about numbers going up.
Grammar: There's like 1 or 2 errors every couple of chapters. If this really turns you off, stop reading free stuff on RR,I guarantee you this is better than 99% of the rest of it. - JBakRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have enjoyed the story so far. Will be interested in learning more about the main character Zade, his past and how that past has shaped him. Plus it’s always an enjoy read when you get a good apocalypse litrpg, the possibilities are endless.
50 word minimums, I really never have that much to say, you definitely don’t want me to critique grammar. - L.R. Monroe (Emrys)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reece once again delivers with an awesome start to a great story. On a personal level, I can relate with Zade and it's always good when an author can do that with a character. Reece is really good at pulling you into the narrative, and keeping you there. Your lost in the MC's troubles, and bang, action happens! I like it quite a bit. Really awesome start, give it a shot!
- LordamnesiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Like the title says, this is a fantastic start to a System Apocalypse story. The survivors are fairly realistic, and have already taken losses. The locations are interesting so far, and I fully believe will develop into a rich setting for the humans to grow stronger. What really sets this one apart, is the MC. I love the hints we have so far, that he's a literal mobster from New York City, son of a 'famous' mobster. Such a change, having an actual developed person instead of an introvert as is the most common. Keep up the great work!
- J W SRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5But builds at a reasonable pace. From some east coast traditional criminal culture "loser" drinking his troubles away at a mass market cruise ship tiki bar to an inspiration for the passengers fighting back against "the god driven apocalypse" seems a natural progression. The MC isn't overpowered by the system, he's just got an edge because he's related to Mobsters. The Gods are keeping an eye on him. Can't be good.
- MagstzerpRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Starting off well. The main character has chosen a very normal class, but nowadays, when people are afraid to go the normal route in order to make the story unique, this may be a good thing.
And yet, his choice of type of magic used may be a seldom used one. - MozgovedRoyal Road★ 0.5I gotta admit I didn't like anything about the story and really tried to push myself forward with it, but, alas, here we are at chapter 7 and I am dropping it.
The setting: main genre - system integration, sub genre - horror apocalypse. I didn't find any redeeming qualities of using of tried and trusted tropes.
The story: I won't be giving away any spoilers, as the story description clearly says the apocalypse starts when the MC is having fun aboard a cruising liner in the Carribbean. Pretty nice setting, which actually lured me to try reading the story, regretfully nothing made the story interesting and/or engaging up to chapter 7 where I dropped. The use of ship as a story driving factor was utterly wasted. It may be will shine in the further chapters, but regretfully I have lost the drive to reach them.
The MC: very disappointing and has no character. We don't know anything about him, apart from his origin from NY City and criminal connections. A lot of cultural references to NY and gang crime are absolutely lost to non-US readers and are thus a complete waste.
The system: it was extremely rushed through we don't get any understanding apart that it exists, there are data screens and some generic classes to choose from. No indication is given of how it all works, how magic works, do people get skills apart from mage spells. Nothing.
The grammar: grammar is ok, with the style floating towards short rugged paragraphs. The style lacks in the descriptory department, while the action develops quite rapidly, thus making it onerous to follow and engage with the story.
The resume: really hard to recommend to anyone as the story lacks in any redeeming qualities. If you like stories based on ships and American crime culture you might find it somewhat appealing. Otherwise the readers engagement is barred by lack of general exposition, descriptions of system and the characters and breakneck pace.
