Dreaming of Family

Description

A lazy gamer dies defying their own fate. Given gifts for changing themselves with both action and conviction, they are tossed to a world of their choosing. So of course its got to be Pokémon.Set roughly ten years before Ash is born. In Blackthorn City, follow Ella Mita as she finds a way to become something more than she could have dreamed. And the family she never knew would be her life.

Disclaimers: I don't own anything pokémon, just the ocs!

About the gender-bender tag. Its an homage to a friend I lost. It comes up very little and I'll put a longer bit further below for details I am fine sharing. No judgement if its not something people are interested in or don't see the point. It won't be changing and is very much for my own feelings.

Warning! Emotions below!

My friend and I shared a lot of love for pokémon. Its how we connected. After she chose to transition from he to she we fell apart. Mostly because of my projections and ignorance. Of not letting myself see who she was the whole while.

When she died I started dreaming of this story. And I wished she never had to go through all the things that made her life difficult. Plus I totally couldn't even begin to think of how to describe what she went through. So this is a wish for her someplace having a good, exciting life like the MC will. If someone is offended by the ease of her rebirth then I am sorry. It is a sincere wish that somewhere my friend didn't have to deal with the awfulness she went through. And I apologize because it won't change.

I am not a writer. I started this to deal with my emotions and guilt.

And it became something I loved. Enjoy or not as you like. I wish you a fantastic day regardless.

I don't normally give reviews but this book REALLY deserves it. IMO it is equal to BoC. If you want the gist here it is.
A fantastic book with real characters ✔️
    Long (unbelievably so) chapters ✔️
A compelling story with mystery, despair, comedy, and love ✔️
A enthralling mystery teasing future events and the book's (presumable) end ✔️
A book I can firmly say is in the top ten out of the 336 books I've read on RoyalRoad* ✔️
*which are what is left after I HEAVILY filter through other books to choose what gets a shot.
Style: 1st person for the most part with dotted 3rd PoV to add flavor when needed (one section even used descriptions of pictures). Large time-skips throughout which feel well placed to provide brevity (ironic considering the chapter length) to the chapters. Most of the story is the now but there are hints of the future and moment that are more like a diary entry. And despite all of those different things, Gildenth makes one cohesive, no, seamless tapestry of a story. (5/5)
Story: If you don't find your emotions tied like a marionette to the authors hand by chapter 10 I'll eat my hat. This book should firmly have the Slice-of-Life tag and it is the better for it. Fun family moments, outside perspectives, heartfelt letters, incredible battles, despair and emergencies, jokes and teasing and bend into a masterful story which never focuses on any one thing for too long. (5/5)
Grammar: Almost flawless. I think once or twice I found a sentence where i think the wrong word was used (probably an autocorrect screw up). Other than that perfect. And with over 190,000 words at the moment that is QUITE the accomplishment. (4.5/5)
Character: Beautifully written... What you need more? I guess so... Every character you meet is engaging and unique, they all have there own pasts and bring so much. The MC and their team is incredible. Despair, guilt, hope, love, community, family, drive, all blend together to make them feel like you can reach out and touch them. I have ye

One thing I've always loved about the pokemon world is the baked in idea of found family, and building that family towards shared goals. The story the author tells perfectly captures that magic and further more is a love letter and wish for their friend. I can't count the amount of times I became misty eyed while reading this story. I adore it and am grateful the author has shared this work here.
I hope to see it continued further someday, but even if not I appreciate what the authors story left me feeling and thinking on.

Im enjoying this work so much i cant even put in words seriously, if you haven't given a try yet, do it you won't regret, there are a lot of Pokemon fics that always go the same path but this one feels so refreshing! It has good grammar, good humor, good character building i love it so much!

Honestly there is not much I could say about this. This is the kind of story on royal road which makes me keep coming back. Most stories on this site are short sighted and are less stories and more number simulators. But every once in a while you find a gem that just makes you so happy. It’s just something about budding authors with interesting ideas that itch a part of my brain and the execution of that idea is just amazing here. You can feel the authors love for the world of Pokemon in this and it’s so good. The format ending with a letter from each of the Ella’s Pokemon is such a joy to read and has made me cry more than I would like to admit.
I think the best thing this story manages to show is the connection between Ella and each of her Pokemon. The joy of having found family and companionship are really explored well here. This a story I believe I will be following for a long long while and I know I will have no regrets. Thank you to the Author for writing something so amazing.

Not much to say but that this a really good Pokémon fanfic. Also that I really liked how you portrayed all of the pokemons personalities. Also how you had her focus on her goal rather than romance. Also that almost anyone is a future partner. Also like that you mention the future pokemon but actually say what they are as a pokemon.

This was WONDERFUL. I don't have all that much to say but if you are looking for an emotional story about chosen family and pokemon this is the story for you. The premise is also very interesting to me and I won't spoil anything but the unique take on the Johto region was great. I REALLY hope this story continues because this is something special.

Really enjoyed this story so far (just finished chap 17). The team members are strong and each have a distinct personality. The pace of team progression is very satisfying.  This is not a story where 500k words later the MC has like 4 Pokemon and 3 badges. Overall, I have really enjoyed the story so far and am looking forward to more!

A great addition to the pokemon fanfics on the website.
Style: It's a little rambling, and there is a lot of telling not showing earlier on, but it's enjoyable and easy to follow.
Grammar: Easily the roughest part of the story. Some paragraphs are neat and tidy, read smoothly, etc... Others are... very hard to read. Some sentences have extra words, some have words left out. Run-on sentences are prevalent, and the severe lack of commas when needed makes things hard to read at times. If the grammar were perfect, then reading would be much more enjoyable.
Story: A unique take on the pokefic genre. It's familiar to many others but has several separating aspects that make you want to read onward to know what will happen next. Very enjoyable, but there was little to no proper plotting. That is very much apparent. It does seem to drag onwards and onwards at points, and the views from the future at the end of chapters aren't one of the things I personally enjoy. I usually skip those.
Characters: Each character is unique and easily distinguishable from each other. This is one of the better aspects of the story, as the hardships are unique to one another and you can relate to the problems they face.
All in all, it's a good story, if rough around the edges. If you like pokemon fanfics, then I'd give this one a go. By the time you finish two chapters (They're VERY long chapters.) you'll know if you like it or not.

I like the story for many reasons, one of which is the way the team members personality's all seem different and still play well into the story lines.
I also like how the main character is not perfect but also uses the start to the best advantage.
The spelling seems solid as does the grammar with few issues in ether.
The combat is good with a good pacing and detail.
Overall a really good start that I look forward to seeing more from.
