- Caz LewisRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Okay, they say you always start off with the bad before you go with the good right? Well, and I am nitpicking here, the worse part is a few perspective breaks, but they are minor and do not distract from the story. Also there was one scene where a mom and daughter in law discussed their sex life which felt a little awkward, but that is probably me projecting. Plus I am sure real conversations do happen like that, but that is more a wow they went there kind of thing. Again, a minor thing. Plus the conversation did add to the story, so I can't really complain about it.
With all that said, this is a very expansive world that is put together well. The prose flows logically and you can just sit back and read fluidly and immerse yourself in it. As the characters are being built up with witty dialogue, just enough plot is happening to create an intricate web of events that I am excited to see what happens next. I am only at the end of chapter 3 at this point.
The characters and plot are really strong. I don't want to talk about spoilers but just the wide range of settings is probably also what I really enjoy. The scenes feel real, and I am here for it.
Grammar wise there are still a few typos, but nothing jarring to take off score for.
Overall I feel like this is going to culminate in a very entertaining mess as the storylines come together. You should definitely check it out. - Merlin PendragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Engaging. We follow the lives of a number of high priority figures in a low-fantasy earth with inspiration taken from ancient Greek myths and folk stories. In a similar vein to Percy Jackson - except not for kids, definitely not for kids. I can see there is an overarching narrative and I am curious to follow it.
Style - Eloquent use of a wide range of vocabulary to paint a vivid picture. At times it can seem like there is too much description for mundane things but on the whole it’s clear and easy to follow.
Story - The story appears intricate but is easy to follow. I am excited to find out what will happen next.
Grammar - Entirely legible, and nothing that would stop you reading. That said, there are a few hiccups; redundant words, run-on sentences, and missing commas. There are cases when this is a stylistic choice, for example in speech marks, but there are other cases that don’t fit this criteria.
Characters - There are a strong array of independent characters, the one weakness was a mother and daughter who I, at times, struggled to tell apart.
In conclusion: if you are on the fence about this series I’d say “give it a read!” - RavensFantasyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5With the three chapters we get, we are introduced to many characters. Each being unique and some even being creatures posing as humans. This piqued my interest as it made the characters more interesting.
Along with its unique characters in this story, we get to see different POVs of different characters. Introducing us to the world and characters themselves. I personally didn’t mind the POV switches as they are done well and marked so you can tell it is a POV switch.
I didn’t really see any grammar issues. Writing is a bit weird here and there which may be hard to read on occasion but it isn’t bad. There were a few missing quotation marks.
Overall, the story itself seems interesting and I am interested to see where it goes from here. Definitely would recommend giving it a read! - The CommentatorRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5It was pretty good, all things considered. Nothing absolutely terrible, but nothing truly amazing, either. I'll forgo the explanations for each part, and just list what I liked and disliked. Also, this was part of a review swap.
Like:
Good grammar, and easily readable and understandable Style
The characters seemed well-made, and acted how I would imagine they should
The world seemed very interesting
Dislike:
I think you described the characters' appearances in too much detail. It isn't necessary, and takes away from the experience a little bit. I would basically call this a nitpick.
I think there are too many POVs. I didn't have nearly enough time spent with each character to get even a surface level understanding of them.
And that's it. I would recommend reading this story. It could go to very interesting places.
Apparently this wasn't enough words???? Anyways, I'll just type some suggestions here.
Shining Wyrm, a fun story about a dragon living with their adopted family.
REND, a story with amazing characters, interesting mysteries, and superheroes.
Vigor Mortis, a light-hearted story about existential terror
Common Clay, great fight scenes and an interesting system.
Path To Transcendence, a popcorn story to read in-between the Greats. - ZosmyRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I honestly don't think this book is ready to review yet.
My reasoning: There are a lot of different characters (I assume they'll be 7 important ones... eventually) that aren't related. Meaning that each one needs their own introduction- something that takes up a lot of time/words.
Now I like multiple POVs, and I'm not against the 7 idiots thing. However with so much to introduce (theres also a fair bit of worldbuilding in these first 10k words too, now that I think about it), it does lead to everything feeling muddy and confusing... at least for now.
Style: Almost perfect, I wouldn't complain about this at all. I still say that it's not nearly at the level of a professionally written book, so I was really debating whether to put this at 4.5 or 5 (obv eventually settled for 5, but it was a hard decision).
Story: Confusing at first, and it took me a while to grasp the entirety of the worldbuilding. After that it's pretty nice, but there isn't much of it (reviewing pretty early on, so no more chapters available.)
Grammar: Little to no issues, not much to say. If you REALLY want to make sure, reread this or put it in some online tool, but it's really not an issue.
Character: Another hard one. They're not the most 3-dimensional characters, but I don't find myself confused with their actions or anything.
FINAL VERDICT: If you ask me, you should just check how many chapters this book has when you're reading this review. If it's more than (I dunno, but let's just say) 8, then go give it a try. Otherwise you're probably better off waiting until there's more. - yroviRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The intriguing premise and ambition of the writer makes for a complex read that is just starting to gel and move forward to a place where I can begin to see the shape of the story.
Multiple characters, locations, and many threads pulling at them mean this is a challenging read, but rewarding to those who make the effort.
The scope is huge... with characters that live for hundreds of years, their memories to mine, and the power they have amassed that joins their innate abilities means there are endless possibilities here.
I believe this story will grow and mature and become a significant work - and so this is definitely worth a follow.
However the broad scope does mean that it is a little premature to give a fuller review. With multiple character arcs this is a common problem in the early chapters... there has just not been enough time for the characters to finish enough of the beginnings of an arc to see the shape of it.
I'll revisit this once further chapters are posted, and update this review - as always my reviews here, and elsewhere, are works in progress as I complete stories and come to understand how well the preparations laid are landed in a solid plot.
