Five years after the Abysses appeared, the world has turned into a network of deadly dungeons. Monster Hunters fight with skill and determination, Paladins gain supernatural abilities only by surviving direct contact with the Abyss.
Takuya Nakamura is no hero. At 17, he’s the weakest Monster Hunter around, struggling to survive in a world of legends. But when fate pushes him past the point of no return, he is reborn as something no one has ever seen before. Neither Monster Hunter nor Paladin, he walks the path of the Doom Knight, a forbidden power bound to death and destruction. Tasked by an enigmatic organization with a secret mission, he must find a way to seal the Abysses forever. Yet with every step deeper into the darkness, he risks losing what little remains of his humanity and becoming the very thing he swore to destroy: the ultimate evil.

What to expect from the series:
- A weak 2 strong male MC, starting as a bullied schoolboy and growing into an anti-hero with the power to save or destroy the world.
- An MC who constantly faces impossible moral dilemmas, blurring the line between hero and villain.
- A cultivation-inspired power system tied to the Abysses and the MC’s transformation into a Doom Knight. Progression comes with heavy costs: morally, spiritually, and emotionally.
- A mix of slice-of-life moments and high-stakes action. The story is a slow burn, designed to be really, really long and immersive.
- No cringe romance or explicit stuff. Relationships are realistic and add to the overall story.
- A rich mix of Isekai, LitRPG, and cultivation elements, combined with an intricate world full of guilds, and unique power systems. Perfect for readers who enjoy deep progression fantasy with an epic adventure at its core.

- ZacheasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Doom Knight Dungeon takes place in a modern-day world where mysterious gates to monster-infested dungeons are appearing all over the globe. Humanity, in response, is adapting to fight back against these emerging threats. The premise is reminiscent of Solo Leveling, especially in the early chapters. The main character starts off as a social outcast—a so-called “loser” that people look down on or outright ignore. However, he dreams of being one of the rare few who not only survive these deadly dungeons but also return stronger, with newfound power and the respect that comes with it.
The characters are generally well-developed, with clear motivations and personalities. That said, a few of the bullies come across as overly exaggerated or cartoonish in their behavior, which can be distracting at times—but that’s a relatively minor gripe.
The world-building is solid overall, although there are a few puzzling elements that don't quite add up. For instance, it's unclear why governments would allow untrained young adults with minimal gear to enter dungeons that pose such catastrophic risks. Logically, one would expect a highly trained and well-equipped task force to be formed, with serious recruitment, vetting, and preparation. It's hard to imagine a society facing global dungeon incursions not investing in a more structured and strategic response.
That aside, the writing is often poetic and vivid without being overly flowery. The descriptions are engaging and paint clear mental images without bogging down the pacing. Grammar, spelling, and overall chapter structure are clean and professional—no noticeable errors stood out during my read.
All in all, Doom Knight Dungeon is a fun and engaging story with strong potential. I'm excited to see where it goes next. - GhostcatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The most dangerous people are sometimes the ones who, having had no power, find some. Takuya Nakamura is one of those character types who'd sell his soul to any buyer to change his life. Finding himself in a hopeless situation, he throws himself into a likely fatal one.
The style is classic web novel, not getting in the way of itself or readability, using straightforward language and a canny sense of how to lead the reader to the next chapter. The cliffhangers are real, and every chapter leaves you wondering if this is the moment Takuya's gambit doesn't pay off.
The grammar is very clean, with no flaws that make you stick on any elements. The RPG part is there but doesn't overshadow the story. Instead, it enhances it, offering support and explanation only when needed.
Doom Knight Dungeon is dramatic, with youthful trauma on a backdrop of growing world disaster in the form of the Abysses. These portals bring in powers that can be captured by a rare few and cultivated, a seeming balance between the forces beyond the portals and those existing in the world.
All the hints are there, and easy to follow to see where the course leads, provided Takuya survives the next potentially fatal incident. At twelve chapters in, he's still struggling with his fears but growing in desperation, which is always a good kick in the backside for reluctant protagonists. Resolve is the birthplace of heroes, and action their vehicle. Whether or not Takuya becomes a hero or an anti-hero... the story will tell.
This serial is studded with literary and mythical references, which is always candy for this reviewer. This work definitely has a plot for length, so if you're looking for something that will be long-running you should be able return to it over and over for quite a long time and keep finding new chapters.
If you like a morally strained protagonist, a LitRPG that isn't overrun with stats but still uses them effectively, and anything isekai, this is the story for you. - Haviel2102Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The initial twenty chapters of "Doom Knight Dungeon" pull the reader into a relentlessly bleak and captivating world, masterfully blending slice-of-life misery with sudden, brutal supernatural intrusions. The narrative's primary strength lies in its unflinching portrayal of Takuya Nakamura's suffering. From the visceral depiction of his everyday torment at school to the crushing weight of his family circumstances, the author crafts a protagonist whose desperation is palpable and deeply resonant. This raw emotional core makes Takuya's yearning for power and escape incredibly compelling.
The world-building, though gradually unveiled, is another significant asset. The concept of "Abysses" and the emergence of Monster Hunters and Paladins creates an intriguing backdrop of a society grappling with a terrifying new reality. The story excels in its pacing, seamlessly transitioning from Takuya's bleak school life to the perilous and chaotic entry into the Everland dungeon. The introduction of supporting characters like the enigmatic Paladin Ryn Valen and the initial camaraderie, however flawed, with his dungeon party members add layers to the narrative.
Furthermore, the narrative doesn't shy away from graphic detail, whether it's the depiction of violence or the psychological trauma inflicted upon its characters. This stark realism, even within a fantastical setting, heightens the stakes and immerses the reader in Takuya's harrowing journey. The first twenty chapters establish a powerful foundation, promising a dark and thrilling saga of a tormented soul seeking to carve out his destiny in a world teetering on the brink. - JackParker462Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm only a few chapters in but man this is turning into a favorite read as far as I'm concerned. Writing is descriptive, scenarios are suspenseful, foreshadowing is red shirt worthy (😉) and the MC acts like a noob should. Can't wait to read to when he is OP. Lots of Easter eggs, if you know, you know when your read them. Author sets up scenes with imaginable writing with real world example that you can look up. In the chapter I just finished before this review he mentioned the music from a old movie that I looked up before continuing and man did that set the mood. Looking forward to many, many more chapters.
- SOMBRAcorpDTRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Doom Knight Dungeon stars hiting right at home for readers who suffered through their childhood. By bullying, fear of the future, economic difficulties... Hardships that throw us to the darkest layers of our minds.
Some of us were like Takuya, begging for a change, for something to fall from the sky and turn our world upside down in a possitive way.
We readers (I pray) found the way to surpass such difficulties and moved on.
Takuya entered into his first Dungeon with aims of respect, the start of a path in which he could stand high and might... But amidst the darkness, cruel intentions and lies, he found the Abyss and stared at it.
That was the birth of the Doom Knight.
LitRPG at it finest, that is an obligation and it's perfectly fulfilled. If you seek an experience inspired by Solo Leveling with touches of dark fantasy, Doom Knight got you covered.
Characters with personality, antagonistic and merciless. They will have no pity for Takuya, ranging from his bullies to the mightiest Palandin alive.
Superb storytelling, it keeps you hooked and on the edge of the seat, and the grammar on point.
Go on, step into the Abyss with Takuya.
But always remember that when you stare into the Abyss long enough... the Abyss stares back at you. - Atlas D. WrathRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5BLUF: This an enjoyable slow burn story with RPG elements that are addicting for the character as well as for the reader.
Style: I was not expecting a first person true/close style and this is my first. I'm not sure how i feel about it but it seems to work. Most fictions are written in 3rd person limited for various reasons... IMO it might be because it's easier to change point of views?
Style2: It's a fast-paced slow burn, so some of the transitions between scenes and chapters are sometimes tough on the reader. All the gaps get cleared up but I found it jarring a few times.
Story: Everland is unique and I really enjoyed that arc. There are obvious revenge elements for a kid that kids bullied, but the story has real consequences for the MCs actions which I appreciate. It fell off a bit for me during the last few chapters, but it still packs a punch. When the story started getting the litRPG tropes and status screens, I felt that the story would advance into your typical plotline... I will follow this story to ensure it remains the dark fantasy that I enjoyed in the earlier chapters.
Grammar: Good grammar throughout and you can tell there might be a little model helping out for editing. Though the story is great so I appreciate the extra aid to make sure grammar is tight.
Character: For anyone who has gone through bullying, the MC is very relatable. Those who haven't mind find his tendencies a bit irrational. His best friend is confusing and not likeable. I personally am glad for what happened to his friend... anyway, as for the bullies, easy to hate as they should be.
Character MC: The MC is having a hard time, but he also gets a lot of lucky breaks. It makes sense at the beginning of a story for a little bit, but I would caution this going forward. We all struggle with this as writers who love our MCs. My advice going forward, luck should help the antagonist not our protagonist. You could argue I am out of line with this rant, because there are several unfortunate - BirdBugBooksRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is very well written from the grammar to the fight scenes everything flows excellently and the author is truly talented at conveying complex fights and insane situations in a way that is still understandable to a reader.
So from a purely mechanical standpoint the book is perfect!
Moving on to the world I also really like the lore and details of both their society and the antagonistic forces. While it builds off the standard dungeon apocalypse formula it expanda in a deep way. I won't go into spoilers, but I will say that it gives me Lovecraftian vibes and has a delicious degree of madness.
For character and pacing I'll go together and I think that this is where the story struggles somewhat. The main character is bullied, like seriously bullied the typical anime level bullying where not onlt is he routinely humiliated and beaten by his peers, but even the teachers treat him like garbage.
This isn't my preferred starting point for a character, but I won't fault the author for it as some people are into it.
I think the story is building up justification for why our MC will struggle with his humanity and walk the edge of becoming a monster. With that in mind I think it's well done as I have seen too many stories jump straight into edge-lord territory without any justification of why the character got to that point.
The part that I think could be improved is the overall pacing where our character is thrust into one thing after another and doesn't really even have any moments of positivity. Pretty much every side character is either neutral or antagonistic and their only purpose seems to be to push him closer to the edge.
So I'm interested to see how the author will justify our main character not just destroying everyone as at least so far that seems like the only reasonable response to his hellhole of a life.
(If he is just going to give into the darkness then I apologize for my feedback as that totally feels like where it should go at this point) - Mon0Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is incredibly engaging, with tension and pacing that keep the reader on edge from start to finish. The dungeon feels alive, evolving in unpredictable ways that make even familiar bosses like Empress Malpheria terrifying. The MMO-inspired mechanics, from item levels to K-Coins, ground the world and heighten the stakes, while the action sequences are cinematic and visceral—whether it’s dodging hellhounds or navigating the spider queen’s lair. I especially enjoyed how you balance combat with psychological tension, showing how the dungeon brings out fear, desperation, and darkness in your characters. Even small details, like the quirks of Kermit Coins or the moral dilemmas over quest rewards, add depth and charm to the world.
The characters are a real strength. Takuya’s fear, clumsiness, and moral dilemmas make him relatable, while Sin-Joo’s deadpan pessimism and Ryn Valen’s intimidating aloofness add tension and intrigue. Hye-Rin and Dae-Won provide grounding and mentorship, and their interactions feel natural, mixing humor, guidance, and emotional resonance. Some passages could benefit from breaking up longer paragraphs or smoothing tonal shifts between humor and horror, but overall the story’s psychological depth, high stakes, and immersive worldbuilding make it compelling. With small tweaks to pacing and tonal balance, this could easily be a binge-worthy series that hooks readers from start to finish. - OnceWrittenRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The opening throws you into a vision of pure chaos: a mad samurai, wreathed in the flames of a burning brothel, cutting down the ghosts of his past with a cursed blade. He is a force of nature, a monster beyond pain and guilt. And then, with a sharp snap back to reality, you realize this isn't his story at all. It’s a black-and-white film being watched by our actual protagonist, Takuya Nakamura, a bullied high school student who desperately wishes he had that samurai's power to escape the daily hell of his own life . This brilliant opening immediately establishes the story's core conflict: the stark, painful gap between the heroic strength Takuya craves and the powerless reality he's forced to endure.
The story relentlessly details this predicament, making Takuya's suffering palpable. The depiction of his school life is particularly raw, from the casual cruelty of his teacher to the vicious, calculated assaults by his bullies. It’s this unflinching portrayal of his powerlessness that creates a desperate need for an escape hatch. That's right—in Takuya's world, that escape hatch comes in the form of real-life dungeons. It makes his decision to enter the high-risk Everland Dungeon not just a choice, but a necessary, high-stakes gamble for a chance to seize the power he craves and rewrite his own story.
Once inside the dungeon, Takuya's hope for a heroic escape is immediately complicated by even more issues. The dungeon is far more dangerous than advertised, his best friend Sin-Joo falls under a strange, pessimistic curse, and his idol, the legendary Paladin Ryn Valen, is revealed not as a noble mentor but as a cold, ruthless pragmatist willing to sacrifice the innocent to complete his mission . This subversion of his fantasies forces Takuya to confront the grim reality of being a 'hero' in a world where survival often eclipses morality.
Style: The writing is sharp and effective, creating a strong emotional connection to the protagonist's suffering and desires. The aut - JC Chambers IIIRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5If you're big into LitRPG stories, you'll probably enjoy this one. Heavy anime influences, heavy RPG influences. The prose is solid, and there's a strong creative flair in how the author approaches different thematic elements. I appreciate the references to other genre tropes (such as westerns or Shakespeare).
With that said, I feel like the story takes an incredibly long time to actually get to the core premise. There are some really cool scenes in the first 12-or-so chapters, but they ultimately make the first act's pacing feel really dragged out.
Having gotten through the first 12 or so chapters, I can't say for sure where the story is going, but I can't help but wonder if some of the earlier scenes couldn't have been moved to after the reveal of the story's premise or streamlined. If/when the author does a next draft of the manuscript, I would suggest exactly that.
Still, despite my nitpicks, this is a really solidly told story with fantastic imagery and great literary awareness. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the narrative unfolds.
