- D.C.VeilingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Divine Blood is a story about a girl who found out she has the blood and abilities of a demigoddess but has been raised as a human.
Now she wants to explore that divine aspect of hers and follow after her brother.
One of the most important parts of this story is that she rescues a big dog from the dog shelter before he is being euthanized.
That means, yes, the dobermann Foofy is a main character! How could anyone give that dobie less than 5 stars?
To make it technical: the style is great - after I got to a certain chapter, I really immersed myself into the environment and breathed the fantastic, happy atmosphere - absolutely awesome work!
Story: the story is a slow burn and works well with the amazing style and characters. No plotholes, everything is thought-through: 4.5 stars
Grammar: better than 99% on RR - nothing I could find - only a single issue that has already been fixed. 5 stars for grammar, and I don't believe anyone will rate it lower than that
Character: It has Foofy!!! I like the characters, the romance is awesome, and all of them are authentic. And then there is Foofy!!!!! Really, read this fiction; it has Foofy! - Ethan PehRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Gods! Many Gods, demigods and the likes. If you are into stories with an abundance of the big guys, this would be the fiction to read.
In addition to a stable and relatively smooth sailing storyline, you will be getting great grammar and quite an in-depth history into this fictional universe.
We have the children of a suspected timey-whimy God running about trying to ascend to their rightful places as Gods while the world hinders them due to their suspected heritage.
While the MC has not really gotten much of a character development arc, we can ascertain that she is stubborn with a bad case of teenager psyche. Other characters that have been in contact with the MC get far more character development showing a complex and long history and how it shaped their personalities.
This fiction has very few noticeable plot holes and is very good at keeping consistency.
Would argue and say that there is no way MC could hitchhike the whole way to the port though.
While the protagonist tends to make dumb decisions and sometimes can be very overkill and obsessive, she is still somewhat logical. While her mother is not the most likeable character she is, in my opinion, quite realistic and is certainly acting as how a mother should act. (I feel like all the characters have some type of obsession with something. Whether it be accession or child safety. But that may just be a me thing.)
Overall, I would recommend reading this fiction anytime!
P.S. Hoping for more character dev and more power progression for the MC. - librarysmilesRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is about a girl, Valentine, nicknamed Val.
Val has supernatural powers to calm raging beasts. Unfortunately, her powers start off small. How small? Squirrel small.
Once Val managed to grind her skill, the story starts as she slowly gains a relationship with Foofy, a dog that speaks up for her. How? Foofy growls at her enemies when no human is willing to speak or act on Val's behalf.
There is an actual plot, which I am studiously ignoring. To me, the best part about this story is the relationship between Val and Foofy. 💛 - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Don't mind the title. Might be too obscure.
Names in this story got me interested if that wasn't obvious from the other sentence. Love it when it isn't taken from "Most popular name of the decade." But looking away from that, I should say that this is a solid structure with the style, even if the conversational set-up was a bit of a miss from me. Good stuff overall. 4.5/5 - JMWebbRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0If there is one thing that is clear in reading what I have, is that this book has some stronger moments, and some not-so-strong moments. Underneath the moment-to-moment there is a structural issue, and there is a strange genre confusion. The order of items on this review go from praise to criticism. (note, I read 1-0 to 1-8), roughly ten thousand words.
Description
Kieranpierce has a strong knack for imagery, especially describing when things are in motion, how they move, and what they do to their environment. It is clear, and at times beautiful. This is obviously their bread and butter, and they should definitely do more of this. However...
Minor Style Issue
Despite pierce's ability to paint a strong image, they rely on litRPG tropes with ability to names to describe the powers the MC uses. She uses "Mind Blast", and the text says "Val used mind blast" like a pokemon or something. There is also a sort of litRPG drop-down blue box at the end of some chapters, and really it just feels tacked on in the worst way. Going back to Pierce's strong imagery: sometimes their descriptions might have an extra tag to tell us what we are supposed to think about what you've been shown, and I'd prefer they cut it. The imagery could easily stand on itself and would be more effective if it could.
For example (from Chapter 1-8)
His long hair, colored a silvery blue at this time, fell over his shoulders to merge with hers in the tide pool. As he looked down to her in the image of concentration, the color of Tavras’s eyes shifted. His irises now reflected a shade of turquoise from within the layers of the tide pool. It was a profoundly beautiful shade.
You don't need to tell us its beautiful here, we already know!
Also, sometiems we just get information that is not relevant. For example, we are told that Foofy was on doggy-death-row, but I fail to see how that is relevant for the plot of the book at all, or my investment in the character.
Structure, structure, structure:
The big, glarin - MoonweaveRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Divine Blood takes a unique approach to a common premise. Val, the main character, is a demi-goddess with a human mother and an immortal father. She and her brother intended to travel to the realm of the gods together, but prior to the start of the story he unexpectedly leaves without her. The story follows Val as she develops her powers and follows her brother in search of the realm of the gods. Although that description reads like a dozen other YA-type supernatural stories, Divine Blood creates its own path with its original, quite specific magical abilities and an interesting plot progression.
At the point of this review, apart from the main character Val, the important characters seem to be Val's brother Rosamer, her mother, her high school bully Gina, and a dog named Foofy. Of these, Foofy is my favorite ^.^ These characters each have their own motivations and personalities which drive the story. At times the author does rely on wordy descriptions and explanations, but on the whole they are developing well.
Except for some misuse of prepositions and the occasional minor mistake, the grammar is good. The author's writing is more verbose than most, which while interesting at times can also bury the story itself. This I think is something the author will naturally improve upon as they write more and develop their style. It is also likely a question of personal preference.
Would recommend for those who enjoy YA/supernatural coming-of-age stories. I look forward to watching the story grow ^.^ - ZearthRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story is rather well thought out, which is something compared to some works these days. It follows Valentine (Val,) the demigoddess, Tavas, the god, and then there's Floof. Yes. Floof.
While the story does go into the inner workings of how powers work, it's also the chink in the armour. It's a slow burn story, but it does make up for that with its story and plot points.
All in all, it's something worth reading, but best to remember to keep in mind the pacing of the story.
