Any time I start a new story, I feel more skepticism than excitement. In the land of Tolkiens and Martins, it's hard to justify investing myself in a new fantasy setting. Leeze's book makes itself approachable, and I found myself wholly absorbed by chapter 3.
I would describe it as a classic fantasy with an unfurling story. The overarching mystery is a great propellant for enjoying an admittedly slower pace while we get to know the characters. The ones in the spotlight are well crafted, captivating and portray a vulnerable relationship with themselves and others.
There are also some great nods to the world building and the magic system so far. While I don't suspect these to be as detailed or deep as the titans of fantasy, they pique the curiosity and place me in that "imagine if I could do that" state of mind. If only reading could give me magic powers.
Undoubtedly biased, but also strictly objective, I think there is a seed of great potential here. I am excited to voraciously dig into the rest and I sincerely hope you will join me on this journey!
