Description

Skillsfrom stones dwell in my bones, thatnames may never hurt me.

The trouble with the ancient spells of Feor is, that for reasons long since forgotten, the mages who cast the spells also had the bright idea of stuffing them into stones – most of them, anyway. Unfortunately, the unstoppable force that later destroyed those same mages also blew their spell stones to smithereens. These days, there’s still magicinthe stones but getting itouttends to be a bit of a faff. Stone holders gain magical skills by linking the word engraved on a stone to the spell it originally came from. This process is known as ‘triggering’, and fifteen-year-old Malcolm Hob can’t wait to have a go…

What to expect:

A slow-burn, feel good slice of life, progression fantasy with added humour. There are Litrpg elements but the skills don't have levels.

Weak to strong MC (it takes a while)

Strong friendships

Spell/skill system linked to figurative language

and dragons and, er, monsters and a couple of phoenixes - oh, and the odd crocodilian (but they don't call him that to his face)

It's early days still, but honestly this story has started out with a bang. The world, the magic system and the characters have all been keeping my interest very well so far and things have been progressing naturally and painlessly.
Style: Facts and explanations about the world and what's happening in it are revealed smoothly, in their own time, without the need for huge exposition dumps and without getting in the way of the action. The pacing seems a little uneven at times, but not to an annoying degree and it'll only get smoother as the story progresses.
Story: The plot has been keeping me intrigued. The characters' backstories all seem interesting and the hints about the problems to come are also very promising. Again, we're still in the early days, so I can't comment too much on the plot yet. I will say, I absolutely loved the first chapter. Very strong introduction to the story.
Grammar: The story reads well for the most part. There aren't many mistakes. That being said, some of the characters speak with accents that may be a bit hard to understand and some phrases used are unusual. Both are indicative of the place and era the story takes place in and they fit and enrich the world nicely, they're not mistakes. They might, however, give some readers a bit of difficulty occasionally.
Characters: The entire cast feels well written and memorable so far. I'm not sure what I'm allowed to remark on here without being spoiler-y, so I won't say much. The MC is very good but with ample room to grow and the antagonist(s) are all interesting in one way or another.
All in all, a very solid start. I'll definitely keep reading and I'm excited to see where this goes.
