Description
For accidentally poisoning his own master, Luo Fan loses his grandmaster cultivation and is banished from his sect.
He ends up in Xianru, an empire dominated by the largest dark sect in the continent, the Eternal Damnation Sect, led by the notorious bearer of the Ancient Demonic Core, the devil who called himself Ruan Yanjun.
Blind and suffering from an unknown illness, he sets out in the secular world for the first time. All he wants now is to lead an ordinary life as an ordinary man.
But Ruan Yanjun is not about to let that happen. After searching for the banished priest for months, he finally finds Luo Fan in the care of a woman. The once revered grandmaster and Divine Mage is now broken, blind, and dying.
However, he still sees hope. He is willing to do everything to nurture him back to his former self and sit him on a throne, whether he likes it or not.
It’s not out of kindness, of course. He is not called the Devil of the South for no reason.

- CT_PhippsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Our protagonist is a man who has just lost his vision in an Asian inspired fantasy world. The early chapters have a lot of sentimentality as well as an r-rated cynicism but some very likable individuals. I definitely will keep this fiction in mind and recommend it to new readers. Its still early going but it makes a strong impression.
The author takes their time to do setting up for the worldview and you can tell that this is the kind of place where someone without wealth as well as a disability is pretty much screwed. I like the introduction between the protagonist and what I hope will prove to be is love interest. The world-building is solid and we get a lot of scenes where the author makes excellent use of "show, don't tell."
The book doesn't immediately jump into the action and this seems like it will be more of a slow burn rather than immediately getting into cultivation but I think patience will be rewarded for those who enjoy a dark fantasy series. I wouldn't say this is grimdark because the protagonist and some other characters are pretty decent people.
The grammar is good and the style is very much in the vein of a martial arts movie. - longwindedone1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review is based on the first six chapters of Descension. I apologize for any spoilers - there will likely be several.
Story:
In this story, we mostly follow Luo Fan. He was once a grandmaster cultivator. Now he is blind and powerless after being poisoned and banished from his sect for maybe killing his master??? He finds refuge in the care of a woman named Jinjing. As Luo Fan struggles to adapt to his new life in the city, Ruan Yanjun (a leader of the Eternal Damnation Sect) learns of his location. Intrigued by his former power, Ruan tracks Fan down. Ruan offers to bring back Fan's power. Luo Fan doesn't know what to do!
Style:
This is the most unique story I have ever read on Royal Road. I have veered off of my normal LitRPG path and was pleasantly surprised with one of my first Xianxia / Cultivation stories. The author is doing a great job about keeping the readers interest and building tension. This story is written in third person, but it alternates between Luo Fan's and Ruan Yanjun's points of view. The overall tone is pretty suspenseful.
Grammar:
I almost always listen to my stories on the Royal Road app. This story was no different. I enjoyed listening to it, but I can't speak to reading the actual words from the website. No complaints here.
Characters:
There are the main characters that I've already mentioned. Lao Fan was once called Wei Fan. Ruan Yanjun (who is the "Devil of the South" for good reason). Then there is Lao Fan's new friend and roomie, Jinjing. The other characters are ones that are just mentioned briefly or don't stay in the story long: Li Yao, Huang Wen, and Wei Yusheng. Some of them make more appearances in the later chapters.
Btw, you know that the "devil" (Ruan) is no good, but you can also understand why his offer to Yan is attractive to him. My favorite part is the altercation with the drunks. Overall, a great story - one people should give a try! - ReadingSnakeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Descension is a delightful novel about two men, one raised carefully in a righteous sect all his life and thrived so well that betrayal came from the people closest to him - Injuring him so terribly that his cultivation was shattered and his sight stolen; abandoned at the bottom of the mountain and having no choice but to live as a beggar.
The other man is a devil. One who sees a broken, kind alchemist who's never experienced deception and wants to see how far he can drag him down a dark path.
Style score!
Easily digestable, well-written coherent sentences. The story flows normally, and I didn't read any situations that felt forced, or statistically unlikely to happen.
Grammar score!
I've read the entirety of book one and if there were any spelling errors or odd sentences, I didn't see them. The author does an excellent job proofreading their work!
Story Score!
It's an interesting storyline, the plot keeps you guessing and I binged book one over two days. While I'm pretty sure it takes inspiration from Thousand Autumns, as someone who's read both and consumed hundreds of other BL's, Descension is a unique creation of it's own and entirely worth reading - Especially if you enjoy Boy's Love. My only gripe is that I wish and hope the author explores more of the cultivation aspect as Luo Fan gets stronger, as core levels are mentioned but that doesn't mean anything if you don't understand the difference between a lvl 1 and a lvl 3.
Character Score!
Both Ruan Yanjun and Luo Fan are complicated characters, each has grown up differently and they often fight over their viewpoints. While they have completely different motivations it's going to be fun to see how they compromise in the future! Luo Fan is naive and Ruan Yanjun gets frustrated over his kindness, and both of them are going to affect each other more than either anticipated.
