Entertaining, and engaging. I would recommend it for anyone interested in death game anime or who finds the premise intriguing.
There are 4 important aspects to any story. Characters, writing, prose, and action.
Characters: 5 stars
The characters are generally fun and cute. The main character is sympathetic, and her personal drama is engaging. The love interest is endearing, the “villains” are fun to hate, and the side characters are generally likeable. I’d give high marks to the characters. There was a part of me that wanted to mark them at 4.5 stars, since they seemed one dimensional at first, but over time you start to get to see other sides of them, which is nice.
Writing: 5 stars
The premise itself is a cool one, and the mystery it sets up is neat. The drama is largely compelling, and the author does a good job of really making you feel the risk and the danger of being in a high stakes’ death game. The plot twists tend to be rather thrilling as well. I would also say that the writing improves over time as well, as we get deeper into the thick of the plot. High marks.
Prose: 4.5 stars
There is certainly nothing major wrong with the prose, and it was never a serious stumbling block. Some of the descriptions are quite good, and the author’s usage of certain literary techniques are largely well received. There are a few sentences that are pretty clunky, though I am confident that the author is improving here. I think that most of the clunkers were in the first few chaps, with an improvement as things go on.
Action: 4.5 stars
There are obviously no fights scenes, so far at least since this is a psychological thriller. But the debates and the votes are plenty action packed! The high stakes conflicts between a wide variety of the cast are largely engaging and easy to follow. Only 4.5 because I felt that the debates were a little simplistic sometimes, with certain arguments being neglected or forgotten about.
Overall, I recommend it for most peo - AlexanderScottRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I read the beginning of this story—the first four chapters—and while I'm not familiar with some of the shows that inspired the author (or anything about the Chinese Zodiac) I do see the fun of a game like this. At first, it seems like a harmless game with some random players online—but it really isn't! Death is waiting there for everyone.
At the start, Yuri plays online Mafia with Lily, and is suddenly sent elsewhere, and forced to play a game and choose a representative character. Some of the language went over my head, and some of the rules were a bit difficult to understand. But I got the general idea.
The writing here is solid, though some of the elements could be clearer, it does make for a great concept with plenty of conflict for a story like this. I've always enjoyed games that are really purely about survival—makes for bigger stakes! I'm excited to see where it goes from here. Will she survive?!
Thanks again for the story! - Battle_Sloth1Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Full Disclosure: This review is written as part of a review swap, and only takes in the first 5 chapters.
When 12 random student-aged people are kidnapped and dragged into a Death Game of Mafia/Werewolf, it's down to Yuri to outwit, outplay, and outlast the other players, in order to protect the girl she loves. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the Death Game genre: I never watched Squid Game, or played Danganronpa, but for people who are into that genre, you may enjoy this more than I do.
The story gets onto a quick start: 5 chapters in, and two people are dead already. However, due to the discussions of strategy, it doesn't feel overly fast or snappy. If you're into in depth analysis of strategies and tactics, and big brain plays, you will enjoy this, but it's just not my personal cup of tea.
In terms of characterization, some of it's a little thin, but it's only five chapters in. There's tension, between Yuri's own relative apathy and her desire to save Lily. I will say, however, I hate that cat mastermind and its speech patterns. However, based on the info available, you're meant to hate the cat.
The prose itself isn't anything too special: My understanding is that the author comes from a background in Light Novels, so perhaps the writing style matches that type of literature more closely: Admittedly, I haven't read a lot of LN's.
Overall, I think this is a solid first five chapters. Again, I'm not a huge Death Game guy, but for those who are, I believe this will be an enjoyable experience. The author promised a death game, and he has delivered.
