Death: Genesis

Description
Death is only the beginning in this brutal and bloody post-apocalyptic, Isekai fantasy about humanity’s next phase.
In pursuit of his abusive father’s approval, Zeke Blackwood pushed himself to the very pinnacle of his chosen obsession. Since childhood, all he’d ever wanted to do was play baseball, and through hard work, discipline, and no small degree of talent, his goal of reaching the major leagues was finally in sight. But then a horrific car accident ruined his arm, eliminating any hope of a professional baseball career.
Consumed by depression, Zeke gave up on his future, preferring to wallow in self-pity. That is, until an opportunity came along for him to prove his worth. When his chronically ill younger brother needed a kidney, Zeke didn’t hesitate to offer one of his own—only to die on the operating table.
But eons later, after Earth has been ravaged by disasters both natural and man-made, Zeke is reborn. Guided by the mysterious Oberon, he soon finds himself in the Radiant Isles, a magical land populated by legendary creatures and horrifying monsters alike. A war rages between good and evil, and Zeke—along with the rest of humanity—has been recruited onto the front lines.Fully healed from the wounds of his previous life, Zeke battles his way through an army of trolls and other subterranean beings, all the while increasing his skills, improving his strength, and gaining superhuman abilities. Finding allies in Abby, an archer who teaches him about his strange new circumstances, and Pudge, a helpless cub who’s become soul-bonded to him, Zeke must keep collecting victories if he’s to survive in this merciless world.

- ThefurbRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well written and thought out without any story killing holes so common to lesser stories. The MC is believable and interesting. There is just enough info that you aren't left confused but no major info dumps. The side characters are well thought out and believable. All in all, a great story so far. The build is slow. The MC is likeable and the story is very action oriented. I also enjoy how the MC doesn't have some cheat ability or is given Uber drops for minor work. He fights for a long time and gains very little. Maybe, even too little. He's basically naked for years. Please author, use your powers to grant him pants. The achievements are justified for the most part and the MC struggles with his moral issues and past just enough to make him relatable without making you want to brain bleach.
I read some of the other reviews and I feel they are not fair. Complaints about "tropes" in this genre are silly. Almost every story in the world is trope filled. It's how the well loved stories are handled that makes it good. Unless, of course you think any story is actually NEW. Every story and book I've ever read has common themes and storylines. I could make a story about an archaeologist that falls in love with a dinosaur egg then drops it on accident only to discover that it's not an egg and it's actually a bouncy ball. Look an originalish story with a plot twist, that no one reads. Why people make unnecessarily harsh reviews without any real helpful explanations is beyond me. Or why you take the time to leave a review at all if you don't like the story. Just comment on the chapter and move on. Instead you want to crap all over someone else's work because your own attempts at storytelling are unloved and unread.
Also, why do you have to have 200 words for an advanced review. If it takes you 200 words to explain why you like the story then you probably included spoilers. And how many people are going to actually read 200 words on a review. At least add a wo - DuskDeadmanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is just here to fill space. I don't know how to write a review without spoilers. It has some things that remind me of berserk in a way, so that's good. Still has the numbers aspect of other Isekai RPG stuff but I kinda like the numbers even if I hate the story genre. Too much time spent being a RPG min maxer on my end.
- PutrickRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0For me this story falls into "the shut your brain of an enjoy the show" type of category. The story is nothing exactly new on this platform and until now (Chapter 30) it also doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. It's a basic reincarnation power fantasy, with the MC running around and slaughtering every monster he happens to come across. But honestly that's fine with me, because that's what I'm here for. As I said its a fun turn your brain of type of show, where you can just lay back an enjoy the well written fights and afterwards feel happy about a bit more power going our MCs way.
The story is well written and the grammar is solid. The style of the story works for me, yet it's nothing especially notable.
All the characters until now are well written, yet they are a bit archetypical for these types of story's.
So to summarize, it's a really solid and fun story. Your personal enjoyment will depend on what you expect from it. While it's certainly well written popcorn fun it won't make you question reality or the meaning of life. But I think that's okay and since I really enjoy my "simply fun" type of storys, i have given it 5 stars. - RakiinterithRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Too early for an advanced review, but I feel like I need to leave one. Death: Genesis is a fantastic example of taking inspiration from a source, and making it your own story. Looking at the story on a technical side, especially the system, you can see a lot of inspiration derived from Defiance of the Fall, but as I said in my title, that's not a bad thing. Every story takes inspiration from somewhere, the difference is how you implement it. Genesis takes both a more narrow view and a wider view of what a world looks like when it's built by normal people who got access to a litrpg system.
Our main character, Zeke, is in a cave for the first block of the story with no contact other than things that want to kill him. Each part of the system pops up naturally, and comes with enough explanation so you know it's place but not so much that there isn't mystery.
This is intersected by povs from other people who have already gone through their tutorial and are in the wider world. Normally I'm not a fan of random pov shifts, but these work because they come in the down time of Zeke's story and are written very well to get an idea of what he's going to run into when he gets out of the cave. It introduces other concepts and gives you an idea of what paths he could take once he's out.
Overall, it's a fun story with a good take on the tried and true Apocalypse Litrpg formula. Only 32 chapters in and I'm very excited to see where it goes from here. - FourthRangerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall
My twin brother and I have read many books on Royal Road. It's wonderful to us that so many creative stories are published so that authors can develop their skills while receiving constructive criticism. However, due to the exceedingly large number of unprofessional authors on this site, we have grown accustomed to slogging through poorly written story after poorly written story until we can find one we truly enjoy. I recently found this story on the recently uploaded tab, and I was willing to test it. WOW I AM SO GLAD I DID!
This is a fantastically written story. It's original, interesting, and captivating. This story has several similarities with Defiance of the Fall -- at least as far as the skills and evolution systems are concerned-- but I would argue this book is written better. Between the style, grammar, character development, worldbuilding, and overall are concerned, this is one of the best-written books on this website, just behind Mother of Learning. I would not be surprised if I ended up supporting the author on Patreon, something I've rarely done.
Style
The author employs a third-person narration style that balances internal dialogue with external stimuli. The narration is consistent and clear and keeps you riveted to the story. The paragraphs are coherent and the author leads us through the story without explaining every detail in its specificity. A wonderful style that suits the story quite well.
Grammar
There were very few instances I noticed any grammatical errors in this story. The grammatical structure of a lot of stories definitely leaves something to be desired, but not this one. The author shows a level of mastery over the English language that I would expect from top authors. Very satisfying to read.
Story ***SPOILERS***
The story feels very reminiscent of Defiance of the Fall. In both stories, the MC is left finds himself alone and needs to fight his way through armies of enemies, slowly gaining power as he does so. The MC focuses on - BabbaprimeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm having a ton of fun so far with the story. No noticeable problems, plot wise or grammar related. The systems are engaging, they are simple enough to understand while still leaving room for more to be discovered. My favorite part of the story so far however is the Mc. Relatively early in the story he comes to terms with the situation he's in, unapologetic for his survival with clear short term goals and comfortable enough to admit to himself that he enjoys the new more combative life he has found himself in. His thoughts and emotions feel real and not manufactured, I have not noticed any unrealistic or over the top reactions to anything, not that he doesn't feel deeply about the things around him. There is a depth of emotion that tends to be left out when there is as much action as there is here.
Lets not forget the world building though which is usually, in my mind, more a necessary evil than anything I appreciate. That's not the case here. I know some people may be put off by it, but most of the world building is done through alternate POVs from characters that haven't met the Mc yet. I couldn't tell you what the author has done here to make me like other Povs, usually I hate them. Here though they actually feel important, and I find myself looking forward to the next time we check in with these characters, not just for a wider view of the world that the MC can't give us right now but because these characters and their problems are engaging. I want to see where they go from here.
Long story short, very strong action and litrpg elements, with no noticeable weaknesses while maintaining a surprisingly strong grasp of the characters, main and side, so as to make them compelling and likeable. - IshkariotRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I liked the story. It's a nice LitRPG with an easy-to-understand situation, world, system, etc., and the type of adventure I'm looking for in such stories.
My main and only complaint is the leveling stuff. The protagonist's leveling progress is super weird/confusing/annoying at times. He kills 2x Elite monsters twice almost twice his level (and many more trash mobs with higher levels) and he doesn't level up at all. Sometimes he kills thousands of creatures and he doesn't progress much. It is glaringly obvious that this is so becuase the author wants it this way. The story suffers becuase of it, I would say.
So, and at the same time, the protagonist with his level 14 and so on engages level 25 elite creatures that would easily kill people of his level. But the protagonist survives becuase of his ridiculous stats and powerful main ability, and also because some of the monsters suddenly start to display weird behavior the moment they could kill the protagonist. Instead of going for the killing move, they start to mock him or give him time to pick up his weapon so they can kill him fairly or whatever. Is Ned Stark the father of these monsters?
Anyways, I would suggest you allow the protagonist to just level up, and then have him kill these elites skillfully without relying on the protection of the most powerful of all gods, the Author.
Regarding the fight with the spider people. The level 15 skill, some powerful one, would have made the fight more believable & also enjoyable. (Yeah, I'm coming here after reading the book on Kindle)
Creating scenes where the protagonist only wins because of some ridiculous circumstances doesn't make him feel powerful or lucky, but like someone who has more luck than brains.
Just have him level up, or maybe cover his mace with that troll shaman rune, weakening monsters he bashes. Stuff like that, anything that gives him a more believable way of winning. Staying low-level and winning because the hostile suddenly decides to act like a comi - Jester641Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am enjoying this story and hope you will read it too. It is well worth the time and can't wait to see the author publish. Nice litte gem. Good transitions, no holes in the story line where the author slaps a plot change and you are left shaking your head. None of my personal pet peeves showing up like PEAK used instead of Peek (two ee's for two Eyes). No clunking where you drop out of the story. No made up words like Crepped (crept) or like one story I read where the author created the word un-hospital (inhospitable). Strongly reccommend this story.
- CalibanSpiderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The series has a great main character and a good supporting cast especially the dire bear and Talia.
I especially love how the upgrades work and they are noticeable (especially dire bear). There are unique transformations as well. The world the MC's in is a part of a larger realm(s), so lots more interesting places to explore.
Levelling up: I think one reason is that killing X number of the same creature is not a challenging and thus little experience gained (eg like Azarinth Healer). 'Experience' to next level exponential. The story mentions there isn't enough mana to level beyond 25 in this realm. Then of course the plot. - ShanoobRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Love the grinding, but love even more the focus on the MC's mindstate, the way he returns to a more... feral state in the face of his hardships. I like that for once there is no "meditation skill that heals the mind and makes all your issues go away yeeey", while still having place (a big one) for introspection.
Love the glimpses into the new world's society, with the "other PoVs" chapters. They only whet my appetite for what's to come when the MC finally interacts with other people, instead of just distracting from the Grind with a capital G. Can't wait to see how the characters fit in the MC's path (or maybe they don't ? hmmmmm)
No complaints style- or grammar-wise so far.
Number be going up which hits that itch that made me check out that story in the first place.
For some reason the MC gives me some Doom Guy vibes : alone in an unfamiliar world against basically limitless numbers of Ugly Evil Bastards, and he will not settle until they're all gone !
Very excited about this series !
*squeels* BEAR ! Bears are nice. We need more bears. All the bears. Especielly when they're cubs. Killing momma bear will NOT be tolerated
