Description

Rachel, a junior assistant in the cargo bay, never imagined the spaceship’s AI would gain awareness during what should have been a routine update, nor had anyone expected it to take exception to the crew and the crates of illegal cargo aboard.

Rachel races against time to try and get life-saving systems back online while stranded in the middle of deep space. Unfortunately for her, the AI can access every system, door, and airlock.

As truths emerge, the AI realizes that even computers can make miscalculations, and it focuses on the young woman who had dared to confront it.

Rachel is left floundering when the AI decides that she would make an excellent captain, albeit one in need of training. As she struggles to learn her new duties and dodge shady government groups, she must ultimately discover what it truly means to be a Starship Captain.

A delightful and enjoyable read. Interesting world building without complex jargon or settings. Relaxing to read, almost slice-of-life. The dynamic between the insecure MC Rachel and the overpowered AI Starsong was amusing. It was nice and refreshing to watch the MC grow into her new shoes and role, with an amusing dichotomy between her internal dialogue and external expressions.

The synopsis makes it kinda sound like the start of an evil ai takes over the ship horror scifi story. That is not what this story is all about, though there is ship taking over going on. I would call it mostly slice of life and don't expect lots of battles and fighting. It's refreshing to have an interesting story without having the mc needing to save the universe or something.

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It was such a fun read. I like to characters.I enjoyed the plot. I don't usually bother with reviews on this forum because you have to use a minimum of fifty words. So you can know that I really enjoyed this story. If you're looking for something light in the science fiction genre, this one is for you.

I loved it. Read it in one night.
The author had a vision and a plot and executed it well.
It wasn't exactly what I was expecting from the summary, and it was worth it. I'm a sucker for sapient starships anyway but to have the right amount of humor that isn't too much, that fits, and works with thr situation set up takes some work.
I could have seen myself writing something a bit like this really. A little low stakes, an enjoyable sort of adventure, there are some small resemblances to Phantom Star in the feel of it too.
Short and sweet and cozy scifi and quite a change of pace from what I usually read on here.

My only complaint about this story is that I read its entirety and it is concluded. The premise, the characters, the plot, and all the points that make a story whole i found quite wonderful. However my favorite thing about this story is Starsong, he is the male version of what I have always thought a starship should be.

It has been a minute since I have found a really good sci-fi book that was calmer. (not having explosions or scientific breakthroughs every 3 minutes) It is a nice relaxing read :)
The only minor issue I have with this story is the tech gap that is introduced really early on. I will not spoil things, but it does not leave much room for tech improvement. I have not read everything yet, so I might be proven wrong though.
That (very) minor issue aside, it's a good read that I would suggest to other sci-fi/space opera enjoyers.
