Excellent novel, Interesting premise read it last night on. Kindle. Nice world building and character development even with the side characters which you don't always get with these novels

More than a little early but I still like the promise and potential this story has! Really looking forward to more! On a sidenote the release rate or translation rate of new chapters is a little too slow but it's fine, just hope it increases.

There are many stories that have magic that involve society being displaced by said magic. Luckily her society still works and makes mostly logical sense. If that sounds great to you, actually read this. I know some chapters have been removed but I read all of the preview forty. And I might buy myself the book for Christmas

This is good. It's pretty well-written, to the point where the grammar and style is much better than the average. I would have reread this if I could, but I cant. This here isn't on the platform anymore, put over to amazon instead. It might be good and all, but you can't read it here anymore. A shame. The MC was pretty decent, honestly.
    4.5/5 from me.

Outstanding book! This is actually for the audiobook but equally applies to the printed version minus the outstanding performance of the narrator.
The MC is an anti-hero who comes off as a dick at first glance. As the story progresses, we learn (thru flashbacks) how he became hardened to the world. Very well done and much better than a massive data dump. There's a mystery that needs solved and we learn there's several layers of deception being employed, both by and to, the MC.
My only reservation is the other books in this 4 book series is unavailable  (& I've looked for them repeatedly!) in any translation other than Russian. Book 1 (this book) is a complete story but there is an overarching mystery/plot that I can see that would occupy the rest of the series. I REALLY wish we could get the rest of this series....

Not sure about this one.  In the very early stages.  Narrator seems to be headed towards being some sort of white hat dark mage.  Weird mechanic whereby the secret world of magic is introduced through an augmented reality lens.

This story could have been a really great story. It's just that the main character is way to weak. The author had a chance to make a john wick dark magician but instead you get a very weak power wise to the average person in this story. Sure the MC is stronger than the average thug or gangster but he's not going up against average thug and gangsters. When every new character is better than the mc you wish the story is about them instead.
Why couldn't the MC be powerful? It doesnt mean that he wont be getting beat up but that it wont be an uneven fight. As the story goes on you start resenting how weak the MC is because you want him to shut up the characters that are insulting him and treating him like he is worthless but you cant because the MC is worthless and is weaker than everyone but the lowest of the lows.
This story is just a story that grates on your nerves. Its an amazing world with a useless MC.

There is some decent world building and characterization in this story but the premise continues to be muddled. Is it about a stigmatised minority now having to teach the kids of those who ostracised him? A former criminal forced to work with government spooks? A power fantasy? The war between ancient arcane forces and modern magic-technocratic society? The answer to all of these things is yes but the execution is spotty. No focal point emerges through which all the other themes and ideas can be examined and contextualized so the story ends up feeling disjointed and at times sloppy.
    Spoiler: Spoiler
In my opinion the story either needed to pick the dark arts academy teacher angle or the convict working for magic men in black angle. I can't find the humor in a dangerous criminal consultant dealing with wacky bureaucratic shenanigans while his life and the world are under threat. And I can't take world destroying threats seriously when the government also undermines him by forcing him to babysit a gaggle of students and pay back the criminal syndicates haunting him. At  the very least, the men in black shouldn't have been introduced until long after the academy setting had been well established instead of the same day school starts.
