Description

Singularity:

"1:A hypothetical future point in time when artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence and be able to self-replicate and improve itself autonomously."

"2: A point in space-time, such as a black hole, at which matter has infinite density and infinitesimal volume and the curvature of space-time is infinite."

-Merriam-webster

Everything was clean and shiny. A gleaming future for humanity, free of war, disease, starvation and want. A grand and stale Utopia. But what is existence without need, without strife?

Without a need to fight for anything, humanity chose to escape it's prefect reality. To find a place where they could matter again. They chose fantasy, and everyone lived happily ever after. In a world of daydreams. But dreams have a nasty habit of turning into nightmares. Perhaps, that will be enough to wake humanity up from it's deep sleep.

At center of all their digital dreams, in the heart of a quantum singularity turned computer, lies a deeply malevolent AI.

Dark Singularity paints a wonderfully bleak future for the human race.
The author does a great job making this world believable. The familiar intermingles with the alien to create a vivid picture of a society that's endured massive change in a relatively short period. Institutions like corporations and academia have to grapple with the fact that AI can do everything better. Having a "human in the loop" becomes a legal checkbox and nothing more.
There is little ambition when you can't make a difference. There's little need to be in the real world when the virtual one is just better.
The multiple POVs are masterfully handled and each provides a unique perspective on the main plot. I particularly like the depiction of the various AIs in the story and how they differ. They can seem so human and yet not at the same time. The choices made by characters in the story feel rational and many times necessary. Relationships are handled well too.
I am not knowledgeable enough in the topic of quantum computers to judge, but I think I can safely say this falls under "hard sci-fi" despite not having that tag. Just the fact the author puts time into explaining the how of things elevates the sci-fi elements in my eyes.
One piece of criticism is about the internet. What happened to it? How are people connected while in VR?
Why didn't the crew contact anyone but corporate while on the station to share their plight? How about the press?
While it does contribute to the melancholy atmosphere of the story, I feel it could have been expanded on similarly to the prevalence of AI systems and their effects. How are the two intertwined?
As for grammar, there are noticeable typos and mistakes here and there due to the speed of writathon writing, which I'm sure will be fixed in the future.

This is hard to categorize this story. It is a sci-fantasy, dystopian, mystery, horror story? It is set in a dystopian future where all jobs are taken over by AI and humans only have token roles. Something inevitable go wrong and it is up to our two main characters to find out what has happened.
The story alternate between two viewpoints that try to figure out what is happening separately.
It has some cool techno bullshit. I like it.
