- WhitwitsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really really like this story it's literally the exact type of story I like to read I wish there where more stories written like this in this style it's so fun and I really like it I'm like a starving rat in a desert finding my first puddle of cocaine laced water and getting immediately hooked it's so so so good God I wish I could read more but I'm out of chapters and I feel the wrath of God posses me like I'm about to make a particularly hard to explain bet with Satan
Keep it up
With love, me. - DucksTheThirdRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0the novels and webcomics I tend to read have certain style and genres this is in the genre but is just so different it completely flies in the face of the entire thing and essentially cleanse my reading pallet when I'm getting bored of what I like
Must have 50 words - CheiromancerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What a delightful Xianxia story! The first part is particularly good; clever tricks by the MC, smooth writing. If you like the first chapter or two, be assured that it stays that good for a while. I really like the author's interpretation of tribulations. Part way along I stopped being able to follow the MC's labyrinthine plots, though. Still delightful to read and to binge.
The later chapters seem to me to be largely self-contained vignettes. Perhaps I'm too stupid a reader to see the narrative arc. It is no doubt as visible as Mount Tai. Happy reading! - SwagernessRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Regular xianxia bs, but mc communicates with the land directly instead of forcing and insisting upon himself. Heaven is a being you can talk to, and the earth is something out of black myth wukong. Only problem is that there aren't any more chapters or communication from author in regards to continuing the story. 10 out of 10, would read again.
- Jackers30Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0You know. I didn't expect much when I began reading this. A lot of novels introduce their OC's/SI's, give them op power ups and call it a day. I honestly thought it would be the same here. But no, this is, by far, one of the best meals I had.
Characters feel great, the schemes well done, and the navigation of xianxia logic feels fresh. MC's point of view and personality are distinctly different from other ones. For one, he feels like a fucking psychopath and not like an edgy teenager. And his methods remind me of BOC, but their goals are so different that it doesn't feel like you copied them.
My only gripe would be that the passing of time is not really shown that well. We don't see actual physical changes that indicate the years that supposedly passed in these few chapters.
My final rating is a 5 star meal with a side of poorly cooked onions. I would eat it and ask for seconds, but can be better. - PeanutdcRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of the most compact and interesting cultivation novel I've read, and the author actually tries to world build instead of some other Xianxia bullshit!!!
The story and characters are interesting, the villain is interesting, the interactions are interesting, heck even the plot armour is interesting.
I hope more Xianxia novels will follow this as an example of a good novel - IdentityRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A story about trying to live a peaceful life in a xianxia world. Only problem is that politics, Face-slapping and conflict are as wide-spread as they usually are in these settings. Though this one has a twist, if you know about Journey to the West then I'd definitely recommends this, it's pretty similiar as it employs the more traditional Xianxia version.
Style wise I'd say this is pretty good, but it does have two small problems, which are unmentioned time-skips, this is a xianxia settings and chapter by chapter years can pass, which might just be mentioned in a sentence or two, which might seem abrupt. Although that's typical for this sort of setting it's a bit difficult to get used to at the start.
The second is that there's a lot of subtext imo, things that are implied but not deliberately mentioned, including how certain stuff works, there's still some explanations here and there, but the Heavenly Officials stuff is mostly kept under wraps. That's not a huge problem since a lot of fics do that, leaving reveals and explanations for later, but it does seem to be more of a 'lack of content' problem, so a lot of stuff will likely simply be explanained later on.
Now the story is great, has a decent start, with some nifty progression and great moments. There's even neat setup, and the first 'arc' was nicely resolved.
Grammar is good.
Characters are for the most parts good, but there's a bit of a lack of contact. A bunch of characters have been introduced and they're all pretty neat by xianxia standards, except maybe for the odd Young Master, but I think that might also just be due to the Xianxia nature of this fic, meaning that it might simply take a bunch of chapters for them to get reacquainted.
Overall I'd recommend this, but only to Xianxia-knowers/experts or those that are familiar with Journey to the West. Others can try this too of course, but it might have too many unknown concepts to be enjoyable. - PaulTBRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a decent Xianxia romp with a couple of angles different to the usual fare. Although the author claims the MC has no "cheat skill" or such, he nevertheless lucks into an understanding or two that gives him an advantage over other cultivators. I would describe his progression as Slow -> Fast -> Slow and would consider him fairly OP for the latter half of the story so far. After the first third or so there is little in the way of dramatic tension and deadly cliffhangers. Grammar and spelling errors are infrequent and the people depicted have some level of characterization of not particularly deep.
Overall, well worth a try. - Purple Perplexing PineapplesRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I'm not sure if it's my sleep deprivation, magic, or a flaw in the writing, but I just don't feel like I'm smart enough to understand the story.
There's a lot of things left for the reader to interpret and infer. That combined with the amount of flowery language... I feel like I'm only really understanding half the story.
I honestly can't tell if it's the writing or me. I could argue that there's no real indication of time skips, but that's the only thing I'm certain of. I don't know if I'm not understanding the details of what's being written, hidden under flowery words, or if it's just not there disguised under well written empty writing.
Usually I'd be able to tell at the very least but it really feels like there's a great story... Somewhere? That I'm not able to comprehend.
It could be my sleep deprivation combined with my ooga booga lizard brain, or it could be the author's intention to be a side view of a well thought out storyline.
Not understanding what I'm reading and feeling like I'm missing out has tipped the scales for me after a couple chapters though, and I'll try coming back after a good rest. I really enjoyed what I was able to understand and I feel like the story that's right out of my reach is something right up my alley, but yea it's just quite strange. - justsomerandomguyRoyal Road★★★ 3.0While Doaing My Best does have some good ideas and an interesting story, it does kinda read like a first draft. There are a lot of implicit time skips, which can get confusing when they happen between paragraphs, and a lot of telling rather than showing. The cultivation system is cool, but barely any of it is properly explained, even in passing, making a few things feel like they just came out of nowhere.
