This is a novella set in the same universe as "Human Altered." In fact, the only thematic difference between them is that in THIS story, there's dogs!
So if you're a fan of dogs, this will doubly tickle your fancy.
I therefore shamelessly quote my review of "Human Altered":
This is a collection of short stories and novellas that follow the human race through first contact, all sorts of interactions with xenos, and onward an upward until the eclipse the Q (from star trek) in power.
Like early science fiction writers E. E. "Doc" Smith and James H. Schmitz, these stories are full of hope and faith in human ingenuity and gregariousness. Triumph is the natural an inevitable result of hard work, deep understanding, and relying on your friends. Though I will note that the engineering in these books is softer than the aforementioned sci-fi greats.
Taken together, these stories are an ascension story with mankind as a whole as the protagonist. And particularly the engineers. Even when extinction looms, there's a plan for that too. Even billions of years after the last one was seen, you can't count the humans out.
Though there isn't a central character, there are a couple recurring ones. Many short stories are just one chapter. And of course there's lots of recurring organizations and themes.
Grammar and spelling is flawless. If I was to make any critique of this story, it would be that there's really only one character, the hero, whom we see at various stages of development. Some might call this a bit on the Mary sue side of the scale, but I would disagree.
One recurring theme is the somewhat inexplicable anti-slavery sentiment of humans. We all know that isn't an inherent feature of humanity, what with a long (and ongoing) history of slavery in all cultures in the world. But in this story is treated as an absolute evil without touching on the cultural background behind it, nor the memes/thoughts that make in an inevitable feature of all mankind.
