Description
From his seat on the deck, Dakota watches as the sinking sun casts its last, golden light over the swaying fields. He has always dreamed of living off the land, of pioneering and becoming a mountain man. His room back home was filled with novels like that. After showing up here, he isn’t so sure it was a good dream.
Forced to fight for his life, Dakota must navigate a new world, with new rules. The chance of getting home feels impossibly small. Except, it seems, someone has been here before him…

- raine.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The beginning of the story leaves you with the question of why exactly our protagonest friend has entered this frightening world. Moreover, the question of why the goblins ceased to attack him whilst he seemed to be an easy target due to their overwhelming numbers also lingers. It is questions like these that make a reader pursue the answers in a novel.
The character is quite likeable and pragmatic; Dakotas reacts quite sensibly and, rather than attempting to fight the unknown creatures immediately, opts to run, which I feel is what any normal person would try to do in this scenario. The protagonist seems to be like any other person, albiet perhaps with additional survival skills. I hope he gains more personality traits in the future, but that may just be because I haven't got time to create an emotional bond with him from the chapter I have reached.
There are little to no grammar errors, so the reading experience was quite pleasant. - jovoricalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's a good book so far the Grammer's good and the story's interesting. And I have been looking for books like this one for awhile. Also he asked for review's so I'm giving him one!! Also this review has to be fifty words long to post so yeah. One two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven. And that should be enough for it to go through.
- DBoyBluesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A cozy read so far, yet second hand anxiety is real. Main character is a now farmer who has no idea what is going on. At ch.24 it's still too soon to say for sure, I believe though that this will be a great story.
Please keep it up author, I can't wait to read more - OwlishRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is more of an initial impressions than a full review. However, my impression is pretty good. The grammar and spelling are fine. The protagonist is someone I actually care somewhat about, and isn't a soldier in his old life who has a bunch of extremely convenient hobbies and just happened to be carrying his omnitool when he was isekaied.
Give it a shot! - RexxyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Without a doubt it's a great start and I am looking forward where this story gonna lead us from here. You don't even have to read this review any further, better read some chapters.
Farm on the floating island seems like a perfect canvas, where author can build something fun and interesting, and introduce story elements one by one as they come.
Story thus far has been very well made and engaging.
I can't possibly be qualified as judge on grammar and style. Story flows nicely and nothing bothers me in that sense.
MC to me thus far seems a blank page. I hope he will be fleshed out in the future. He has emotions: fear, longing for the home. But he still feels like a npc. Like he has no strong individual qualities, distinct personality. It might be like so because we are very early in the story.
Anyways, that is just my opinion. Loking forward for what happens next. - The OxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Giving a two thumbs up early review for Dakota's Floating Island. It has a lot of good qualities so far that promise a fun read. Dakota, our main character has been mysteriously sent to another world with only the clothes on his back and his wallet. How this happened we don't know, and neither does Dakota.
He is instantly attacked by a large group of pygmy goblins, who chase him through the woods in the gathering darkness. He takes shelter in a ramshackle shed before retaliating with a broken hoe he finds there.
The following story seems it will be one of Dakota making a survival home out of this abandoned farmstead. The setting for the story is also very much a "Castaway" type. He is alone, on what he has just recently discovered is an island in the sky, the only other inhabitants are a group of goblinoids who are VERY hostile.
Why does this island float in the sky? Why is there an abandoned FARM on it? It seems a very impractical location for agriculture, honestly. Why is Dakota here? What makes the crops grow so quickly once he begins tending them? These questions are interesting and worth reading about.
He has discovered that he has some magical powers associated with the farm itself. If he does work on the farm that meets certain criteria he gains xp and skills or something. It seems like a very low impact form of LitRPG, which is great since I am not a number crunching afficionado.
The nice thing about this story is it is well written, well paced, and just comfortable to read. It has all the indications of being a quality fun read. I have high hopes for it. - Trixuny2000Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story looks pretty good so far. The main character is pretty rational but realistic. We are also seeing some hints about the wider world just by seeing him and he interacts with the world. So far it looks like a solid start. I am hopeful as the story and our view of the world expands
- NormalReader_1Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story is great immediately throwing the reader into this new world along with our MC. He is confused I am confused and then he's fighting weird creatures, you really feel the panic and suddenness the MC must be feeling while fleeing for his life. It only gets better from there... for the reader can't say the same for the MC. Also great cover art giving a great face to Dakota.
- hawlolRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I won't take more than one point of the review since there wasn't enough content, but honestly, the amount of times you use the MC's name is so absurd it makes me want to take one more point for it.
Really, it makes the writing awkward as hell.
I'll transcribe a few small paragraphs from a random chapter as an example so anyone can notice it:
Bending over, Dakota combed through the grass. He found a squash at one end, some beats at the other end and, to Dakota’s delight, a few potato plants scattered throughout.
Using a few branches, Dakota staked out the corners of the garden bed. He guestimated it was sixty feet by forty feet. With hoe in hand, Dakota started hacking and pulling. He should be able to clear this up by noon.
...
Pausing for a drink, Dakota considered his work. He had cleared a three-foot swathe the length of the garden bed. Dakota looked up at the waning sun.
Switching gears, Dakota moved from clearing earth to planting. He had dug up a few old potatoes too rotten to eat which he still wanted to plant today. Dakota hoed a small divet in the middle of his cleared swathe which he poured water into. He then cut his rotten potatoes into thirds and placed a third into the divot. Mounding dirt over his first potato piece, Dakota moved on to the second, then third, then fourth, until he ran out of potatoes.
...
Scooping his vegetables, Dakota made his way into the kitchen where he stoked the fire. He wondered how roasted carrot was going to taste.
That night, Dakota did not fall asleep right away. He lay there, listening to the creaks and groans of the old house. His ears straining for any hint of danger. It was times like this Dakota missed his family. He hadn’t thought of them much over the last few days which felt odd to Dakota but now, in the dark and quiet, he wished they were with him. He had four siblings, two younger, and two older. He was close with each of them in a different way and dearly wished they were with him. He was so lonely.
