Timbrelle is being stalked by a monster. We get little snippets of detail here and there about it that really amp the tension up their encounters. The creature stalks her slowly and patiently through the forest but she can’t get away because the forest itself is alive, holding her hostage and watching the hunt unfold for fun.
The whole time there’s this mystery—one we don’t even know the root of. Who really are Adna and Timbrelle? Why can’t Timbrelle attune to aurora gems? Why does the world fear and idolize people from Earth? Why doesn’t the interface work?
But then we see an aurora gem die, learn of a hidden ability, and now I have a dozen more questions. This story is 100% a mystery and the author gives you enough gentle world/relationship building in between that you forget there is legitimately a demon creature hunting Timbrelle. We are reminded every so often that while it does get very funny, the stakes are actually quite high.
The side characters feel fleshed out. The main character herself seems to be sweet and kind on the surface but veers into the grey here and there. She’s not the strong, dependable lead we usually get. From the writing style, I think there’s some definite character growth coming and the story has set the stage for it.
Anyway, I whole-heartedly endorse this story. I usually lurk but I made an account to actually review this story. Hope this helps you decide to read it, lol.
Thanks for such a fun story, Barsnip!

I like where this fic seems to be going. The interactions between Adna and Timbrelle are enjoyable; the world dynamic with the displaced people from earth is interesting; and the mystery of just what is chasing Timbrelle is well done. I'm a little confused as to the relevance of some of the prologue, but that can be expected this early on. Looking forward to the rest of the story!
Redone as an advanced review after having read more; The above remains true, but I do have one relatively minor complaint about the structure of the chapter to chapter transitions. At times I am left a little confused as to how we got from the end of one chapter to the beginning of the next, it feels like a scene was accidentally left out. It is, as I said, minor, but I will say that if/when this fic gets published, it would be a good idea to pad out The endings of some of these chapters. w
It is a little jarring when we jump from talking about poison at dinner at the end of one chapter to exercising and training at the beginning of the next. I don't think it's a large enough issue with the flow of the book itself to warrant immediate editing and adding, but when it comes to things that could potentially improved upon, that is the only thing I can really think of. Keep on writing well!
