- SideBoardTechRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0good style with solid direction for the story. the pacing is intense introducing characters and beats quickly. While the dialogue is done well enough that you can enjoy long conversations that express the characters voice completely, conveying character intentions while also expositing the drip feed of facts we do get throughout the story.
The action is great, but short. I do wish the descriptions within combat were deeper than we have currently recieved. An entire battle took place in 4 paragraphs, and while some interesting feats and abilities were explored. That battle set up conflict and consequences for the chapters to come, so more detail on both the actions and aftermatch would be appreciated.
The characters are a mixed bag. Honestly, Amynta is not the type of character i root for in a story. She has a sad backstory but plenty of natural gifts that set her above all but the most competent and accomplished of her classmates. It means that often she crushes opposition easily, leading to the problem i mentioned above with short conflicts. HOWEVER, Amynta rides a line between apathy and anger and can switch on a moments notice. Which means that she accrues plenty of natural opposition and can keep herself properly challenged within the story.
Overall, great world, interesting characters, slight mary sue, mysterious magic system and a breakneck pace.
