The story is what it says on the tin: a written up DnD campaign. The rating takes the genre into account as DnD novelizations always have some problems with pacing, characterization, and random acts of dice. This is of course because DnD is a collaborative story effort where the drama of the dice enhances the participatory experience of the game, and the joy found in the gameplay drama does not so easily survive the transition to the passive experience of the written word. But people still love it anyway! (Looking at you, Malazan.)
This is what I would call a rough first draft. It’s clear the players had enormous fun with the game, and that comes out in how the characters talk to each other and in how some of the fights are described. However, it sincerely requires an editor to look over things like word choices, grammar, and clarity.
But, if you’re looking for a brief entertaining read, like DnD write-ups, and don’t mind punctuation getting dropped or bizarre word choices and the occasional clunky phrase, this is a fun little roller coaster. The hints at world building are fun, the guys are fun, and the rapid plot development makes you go ‘what!’ in a fun way. Like a book version of an action movie!
