Convergent Evolution: A Pokémon Chronicle
Community Rating
Description
The World of Pokémon is a vast and strange place filled with fantastic creatures and sights of beauty and majesty unlike anywhere else, so when a denizen of Earth finds herself in that world, she’s elated and surprised at how different and yetsimilarthe two worlds were. Convergent evolution is the independent evolution of similar features in species of different periods and epochs in time. Features and adaptations evolved again and again and again: flight, four different times, body plans and eyes, dozens upon dozens of times, all consequences of the evolutionary process on Earth. But across the vastness of the World of Pokémon, a world as far from home as one could imagine, how far can that process go? Well, that one denizen of Earth gets to find out, and the entire book has to be thrown out.

- *FuryoumikoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0While the story is in its early days, it's shaping up to be an interesting if slightly meandering exploration of the setting.
The expanded lore is logical and well integrated with the wider setting. Anyone with sufficient knowledge of the base material can draw out the chain of thought that lead to the expanded lore and see what part of the games and other media it is rooted in.
The protagonist is likable and intelligent, handling their new situation with a laid back attitude that still shows hints of just how stressful their new situation is. They are clearly coping without being super eager to simply throw their old life away. That said, they would be a little more relatable if they made a few mistakes here and there. - AlejoTheBearRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I fell in love with this fic on chapter 2, when I stumbled across is less then 24 hours ago. Already lost aome sleep over it too. This take on, and exploration of that take is SUPREMELY nerdywith a particularly biology slant. This tickles me beyond pink. I totally understand that this isnt everyone's cup of tea, but im chugging it.
- WanderingOwlRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Are you autistic, queer, and a big fan of pokemon? Cause i am and Convergent Evolution is fuckin great. Its meandering in just the right way, the same way a mind can drift off on random tangents and distractions, but the story isnt brought down by these drifts. Rather, each tangent brings in its own little developments and worldbuilding. Also, its deeply queer. Brandy is great, Akari is wonderful, and Im rnjoying seeing how Brandy is playing into the oblivious anime protagonist with how she responds to even light flirting. Not like I can blame her tho, being transgender and abused in the past makes the idea of being loved seem laughable, so Im looking forward to seeing her heal,, and maybe even h*ld h*nds.
Also, go subscribe to the authors patreon, shes doin Good Stuff here - bridieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Originally, I was on the fence about reading this fiction. But then I read a review that stated the fiction was something something 'autistic.' From personal experience, whenever I see a reviewer complain about that, I know the work is going to be good. Some people really don't understand or enjoy the details, I guess. Well, this work has details. It's very well thought out. An expansion on the Pokemon world, really. So many things fail to make sense in the original anime and game. What do people and pokemon eat? What does consent look like? How does aura work? How do pokeballs work? What about politics? Why do separate regions have leagues, how do they interact, and what are travel restrictions like? The only thing this fiction might be a little light on is plot, but it's a slow burn story and a slice of life journey, so really, that's ok too.
One thing I was a bit iffy on was the whole "faller" thing. The pokemon verse apparently has so many SIs that it's a recognized term, for people from our world falling through Distortion and entering the pokemon verse.
Anyways, thank you AEM9Phase for writing this.
Wait a second. AEM? You wouldn't happen to also have written in the Worm fan-fiction space? :D Cheers! - ltouroumovRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Convergent Evolution feels like a refreshing take on the world of Pokémon.
This story expands on the world in a believable (for someone who is not too deep into PkMn lore) and thourougly researched way. It is clear that AEM put a lot of throught and care into the world and it is enjoyable to explore such beautifully crafted places.
As for the characters, they are great as well.
Brandy is a very interesting character to tag along and very relatable for those of us who are queer and neurodivergent. Though her methodical approach to things sometimes slows the narrative to a crawl. She has great chemistry with her team and they all have varying and interesting personnalitier which make for a fun cast. Her travel companion Akari is a fun characted to discover as well. She is driven but also empathic which makes her a great friend for Brandy. The two have great chemistry together and I have a feeling those two will reach great heights. And probably end up together, it wouldn't surprise me at all. - G1lgam3shRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is maybe the most in depth world building in any fanfic I've read. I love fictional taxonomy and this whole system has delighted my to no end with how in depth it is. I love the classification of all these pokemon so much. The new regions make sense and allow for a whole new layer of story telling. Its also incredible how well thought out the pokemon power scaling is in this story, it truly rides the line between stupid op god creatures and tiny little rat pokemon that could maybe do about as much as a chihuahua to a human.
Aside from that the story itself has been really fun up to where I am, the idea of ditto based medicine to help transitional processes, the new gym, the lore of the region and the connection from our world to the pokemon world is incredible, aura is explained fantastically, Mirko is adorable, the fights are well written and do seem like their from the perspective of someone who's never been in a fight before. Brandy is hilarious and her autism rides the fine line of not being too autistic to where it's annoying to read and autistic enough to where it seems like actual autism.
All in all this story has been so fun and I love the way it's taken pokemon and made it realistic while staying away from the grimdark pokemon stories I so despise. - SepiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's an early review, I know, but seeing this update is already making my day. It helps that I can relate to the MC so much as well. Idk, it's a well written story with a protagonist that I already adore, and a buneary that is adorable. I don't need much more than that in anything I read.
- StormadrielRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I may not understand when things get really deep into the Science aspects, but it's fun to read and then go look up the real-world ties and learn a bit as the story goes on. The main character is incredibly relatable for anyone who's ever had a special interest or hyperfocuses. The sheer amount of detail that goes it making sense of the existence of Pokemon is insane (in the best way), and the pace isn't too slow or too fast—everything flows steadily and it's such a treat! Definitely a sit down with a big mug of warm drink and merge with the couch for hours on end type story.
- JeffreyXIIIRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I can tell the story is going to interesting places. It is clear he author pit lot of thought in the premise and how a qorld with pokemon might be. That being said, there is too much of a lore/info dump for me to keep reading. Sometimes reading 4 to 5 paragraphs to get to 2 lines of dialog. Just not worth it for me
- Normal7615Royal Road★★★ 3.0I can't see any genderbender here. I dont know if it's because I've not read enough chapters but that also is a problem. I've read 3 chapters and I've not seen any allusion to genderbending or anything of the sort. All I know is that the mc came from our world to the world of pokemon; only this. I can only assume that I have to read past three chapters to see it and I am not up for that.
I think the grammar is good in the little I've read and I'll give a three star because of this. Really I dont know much about the book but I'm giving this review so that new readers (that are here for the genderbender) will know that they won't see it soon.
