Conquest of Avalon

Description

Revenge.

The Kingdom of Avalon swept across the Empire of the Fox a generation past, conquering the heartlands and leaving the broken remnants to stew in the island duchy of Guerron.

This isn't a story of Good versus Evil, of kindly kings doing their best to lift all subjects, or of unvarnished heroes doing battle against evil.

Instead, this story is aboutpower: who has it, who wants it, and what people will do to obtain it. It is about the violence inherent in the imperial project and how even the most well-intentioned rulers and conquerors are, still, engaging in systemic violence against those conquered and defeated.

Our three point-of-view characters are a peasant turned fire wizard, an excitable duelist with more enthusiasm than sense, and a scheming mage-priestess bent on reclaiming her family's birthright and waging war on the foreign oppressors who rule her home... no matter the cost in blood or treasure.

Like a lot of authors, Husr used to write fanfiction. I used to read that fanfiction, and I get from Conquest of Avalon a much-matured and far-improved version of the experience I always received from their works. I observe a turn of phrase here and there that makes me chuckle, or I admire the degree to which each character is 'themself' rather than a vehicle for an invisible author, and then one of those moments comes along.
A revelation or swell of information comes in the story, and the fog clears, or the dawn breaks, or whatever analogy you want to use. The point is that you glimpse for a moment the stunning intricacy of a world that you now swear would continue to turn if freed from the page. Old clues recontextualised, your theories proven right or wrong, and you see the extent to which even elements you dismissed as insignificant were leading up to this, were always leading up to this. And there is further to go yet.
I find Conquest of Avalon emminently stylish, the story woven to be intricate and yet easily-digestible, it's grammar impeccable, and it's multiple PoV characters charming each in their own way.

I’ve been reading Conquest of Avalon for a while now on its WordPress mirror and have been immensely enjoying it. The story is an engrossing and often amusing tale of three characters wading through the political quagmire in the town of Gueron.
The story does a great job of balancing humor and drama. Husr has both made me giggle and laugh out loud repeatedly throughout the story. The worldbuilding is also well done, I never felt like I was sitting through exposition dumps.
The pacing of the story is also excellent. I find many serials tend to suffer from bloat and tend to meander, this isn’t the case for CoA. Every chapter feels like it serving a purpose and is building towards something even more interesting.
Each point PoV character has a distinct personality and motivation that are at odds with each other. When their various conflicting goals began intersecting and ricocheting off each other is where the story is at its most fun. It’s a beautiful train wreck of people who aren’t as clever as they think they are trying to outwit each other.
I am greatly looking forward to book two, and I strongly suggest you give this entertaining story a read.

    Revanche. Revenge.

Our three point-of-view characters are a farmboy turned fire wizard, an excitable duelist with more enthusiasm than sense, and a scheming mage-priestess bent on reclaiming her family's birthright and waging war on the foreign oppressors who rule her home...no matter the cost in blood or treasure. Fernan, Florette, and Camille are each delightfully different and their stories leave you eagerly awaiting the next new chapter.
Come read Conquest of Avalon if you want a tight story exploring a fleshed-out workd made up of believable characters acting in realistic ways for waht they think of as the right course of action.

I don’t do a whole lot of reviews but this story is just amazing and I think it deserves way more recognition.
Style: Husr’s writing style flows, it just feels natural and I absolutely love it. There really aren’t many places with clunky phrasing or areas where I can’t visualize what’s happening in my mind, which applies to combat as well even if it doesn’t happen all that often.
Story: Phenomenal, I would give it 9 stars if I could. The author writes the story in a way where’s mysteries are slowly solved by both the characters and the reader (nothing comes out of nowhere) which gives you these moments where all the clues come together and it’s just great. The story really leaves you anticipating what comes next. Also the story is a little bit slow paced in hindsight, but it never feels that way.
Characters: Characters for me are what make or break a story. The characters are probably the best thing about Conquest of Avalon in my opinion, they feel real, all of them have depth which gives this book a somewhat large cast of interesting side characters. I keep coming back to this book because of the characters and how they progress and grow.
Grammar: Small mistakes like a missing space after a period, nothing major, haven’t seen a misspelled word yet.
Overall: Top 10 story for me, one of the very best on the site. Give it a try.

How does one deal with the conquest of their homeland?
The protagonists Fernan, Florette and Camille have to deal with this very question. Whether it be a fitting within the system and finding pockets of happiness; seeking the best of freedom away from a people who have seemingly accepted their existence; or attempts at reclaiming what was lost. Each of them have their own ways of looking forward and finding their way, and can we really say which one is the ultimate right?
Conquest of Avalon is a story that does an amazing task of feeling both personal and broad. It has a revolving set of characters who are distinct from each other, yet each of them has a way of getting to your heart because you quickly understand who they are and why the do what they do; and a world that you can feel has a long history, given out in chunks that leave you wanting more instead of being too heavy. It brings with it a fleshed out magical world and system, while not forgetting that even a world of magic, people are still people and they have a way of interacting through politics.
One of the best parts of the story is how the characters interact with said politics and how they interact with them in turn, reflecting their birth and thier outlooks on life.
Conquest of Avalon is well worth the read.

I've been following this series for...years, now, and seeing the notification for a new chapter is always a thrill. The story doesn't try to be unpredictable, rather, plays well-seeded plot points well.
One thing I'll say, is that the pacing will not be for everyone. The characters have a lot of things to think about, a lot of plans to put in place, and my only ding is a bit of lag, as certain plots take time to set up. There's always an even serving of tension, though, and you'll be on the edge of your seat once the shit hits the fan. The author has a way of making conversations that brim with tension, where the reader is equipped with the stakes and implications of every word. Political intrigue, operating on the scale of an empire, that still manages to have earth-shattering epic reveals and compelling interpersonal drama.
This series also has one of my favorite cockroaches of a character, Camille Leclaire. She is the culmination of what makes me keep returning to this series; intelligent in a field of intelligent characters. That doesn't mean she's always rational, but seeing her weave plots that succeed or fail is endlessly entertaining. The author isn't afraid of heaping consequences onto their heroes. Multiple perspectives are used very well, to highlight the flaws in each character's viewpoint. This is especially important when speaking from POVs on opposite sides (or on their own side, or nobody's side) of colonization. You will see the way this world has been shattered by wars and domination in the past, and how history will always come back to bite.

Solid story, but the Florette chapters are sooo painful to read - just a bland, uninteresting and ridiculous character that comes across as obnoxious and annoying. Kinda ruins the entire story for me, which is disappointing since the other characters seem much more real and dynamic.
Rest of the story is above average, but it's hard for me to go really get engaged with a story when a key PoV is such a drag.
