- D. BOHICARoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This grabbed me from the first page. A coin that seduces you with false memories of campfires and beach days, calling your name in your mother's voice—that's not just a McGuffin, that's a threat you feel in your chest.
What's working here is the generational weight. Jim's patience saves Max from the coin's hypnosis, then gets everyone killed when he hesitates at the village. Grandfather was banished for telling "crazy stories" that turn out to be the only truth that matters. There's a thesis here about how families fail each other while trying to protect each other, and it's landing.
The Grandfather reveal is the standout. The rotting hut with the pristine interior. The silent bell that "works if you're listening." The stick discipline passed down through generations. By the time he pulls out a disc with a coin-shaped recess, you realize every "crazy" story was preparation.
Minor polish notes: Some exposition after the first coin retrieval reads like outline notes—consider dramatizing through dialogue as they travel. A few mechanical hiccups (its/its', "shook his head in agreement" should be nodded, "scalding" for "scolding") that a quick edit pass would catch.
But the bones are strong. This is quest fantasy that earns its stakes. When Max is hiding under floorboards while his village burns, you believe the coin is worth dying for—and worth killing for.
"Doesn't mean it's broken, just means you're not listening."
That line tells you everything about where this story is going.
