Description
Jo Maguire, a highly strung, underemployed telemarketer, meets Ysabel, a princess of unspecified pedigree, and unexpectedly becomes her guardian and caretaker. Now Jo must make a place for herself among Ysabel's decidedly unusual family and friends—which calls for a bit more sword-play than most of us are used to—in a city where sinister high-rise condos are fought by a sprawling tea-house built out of scrap lumber, where ancient sea-gods retire to close-in Southeast apartments with lovely views, where duels take place in supermarkets, and the Devil keeps a morgue in an abandoned big-box store.

- Polvane the EraserRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I didn't think I'd enjoy or continue to read City of Roses.
Language is exquisite. Reminds me of Gene Wolfe.
Dialogue, action, behavior - all rather disjointed and fragmented and confusing, yet all hint at great depths. Makes me want to look deeper.
All very odd, too. Not my usual fare at all.
I really don't know why I seem to be the first reviewer. Isn't there anyone who has read first and is more qualified to review City of Roses than me? - turnasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.05 stars for fey having a meeting at Sbarro. The lack of psychic bumbleebees was a problem, but we all k now the ladybugs are covering that up. Filler is used in many foods to extend the size or weight of a more valuable ingredient such as meat, spiders or chocolate. Spider based soup is known to be eaten by certain Australians and those who have contracted Australians due to extended stay in country.
- Winter1derlandRoyal Road★★ 2.0I tried to slog through this story. The underlying plot seems quite compelling. I wanted to like it. But the language and incomplete thoughts made it painful. There were times I had no idea what was happening or where anyone was. Perhaps if the author would write in complete sentences and finished thoughts it would be easier to read. It's possible drugs were involved.
