- OnyavarRoyal Road★★★ 3.0As usual, I am measuring stories to the best stories I can imagine; and so all stories above two stars I would consider enjoyable, with five stars reserved for the best possible stories.
This story is really in its infancy still, so I can't yet fully evaluate it of course, but I have read all eleven chapters.
I'm starting with the story premise itself: This is the story of Angelo from modern Earth, who wakes up after having taken over the body of six-year old Cyclos who lives in a dark age society that has just barely survived a zombie apocalypse. The zombies are long gone, but dangerous monsters are still roaming, magic and technology have to be rediscovered, and there are no cities we know of. Cyclos not only wants to help this fringe community of just a few hundred souls, with his knowledge from Earth: He wants to forge a new empire and get famous on the throne. A lot of the story so far has been world-crafting, yet I am not wholly convinced of how it was done.
The MC (Angelo) is a bland everyman from Earth, and the supporting cast so far have been the commoners and villagers of the community, most of whom are good-willed to the protagonist - naturally, as he's still a 6 year old boy. While there are believable characters including some flawed ones present, I don't yet see prominent (*)tagonists. But: The MC is overly judgy and sees everyone and everything mostly from a utalitarian standpoint: how will sth/so be useful to him when going forward and erecting the future Empire. While he makes friends and even enemies already, and diligently works on his studies and some early inventions, this whole attitude appears to be rather cold and calculating. Most glaring was the sudden change from a regular six-year-old villager, to someone driven: training two professions at once at a young age appears, should be a suspicious change in character, as is the desire to be acknowledged as a wunderkind genius. Medieval societies would suspect possession...
