- FirstDragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5My comments are restricted to the 1st and 2nd Chapter of this fiction. ATM, I give it two strong thumbs up as it is hitting all the right opening notes. I'll update this review as the story develops.
The author has opted for a grimdark fantasy setting where depravity, misfortune, and evil swirls thickly across the land like the fog in The Hound of the Baskervilles. I would classify the style as a more traditional "western" approach to writing vs. the dialogue heavy, plot focused "light novel" style so common here on RRL. IMHO, Jace chose the right style since his language is delightfully evocative; as a reader you can really feel the rats scampering in the slums. The world-building is good so far with great atmospherics as well as the outline of some potentially nifty magic systems.
Character-wise, the MC seems like a competent but not OP guy; a "I'm trying to do the best I can in a rotten world" kinda hero...but it looks like fate (aka the author) is gonna give him at least one big kick in the nutz. I'm hoping that the characters will have plenty of intriguing quirks that make them not-so-cardboardy and help them move beyond the necessary tropes.
I'll end with the advice I give to all amateur writers here on RRL: take your time and let the characters and the world you create drive your story; there isn't any reason to rush because story-telling is all about the journey.
