- BlareRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I never watch Pokemon, nor aware of any fanfiction of it, but to be honest, even as a baseline story, Child of Thorns is something that you can enjoy without even being a pokemon fan. Sure, it took a little bit of looking at Google to search for the details of each character of each pokemon, but again, this was the consequence of enjoying such story that you put the effort to search Google to find out more about what the author just wrote. Overall, I am not disappointed at all.
Style-wise, the story pacing was great, with the attention to details alongside with giving reader's enough engagement throughout, and I like how every single action is describe to give enough clarity and details about the movement and strategies done during the battle. Story-wise, Inyysa Journey was more complex than I anticipated alongside with well-integrated flashback sequences, give us a further detail into this story. The emotional depty of the journey was also evident.
The grammar of this story was well-done, and I like how it flows well without any difficulty. So far, I haven't seen anything disturbing enough for me to stop reading and start editing, however, as a matter of fact, this story is one of those stories that is above what I initially expect from a fanfiction, knowing what a fanfiction could turn out to be, and this story was none of it. Character was also fleshed out, especially with the flashback.
Overall, I recommend this story even though I never watched Pokemon. - Bookman9Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Character: Child of Thorns embarks on the captivating Pokemon journey of Inyssa Dawn, a protagonist With a good head above her shoulder. Alongside her friend and rival, Barry Paladino the lovely dork, their camaraderie injects the narrative with lively banter and delightful bicker. Inyssa's choice of Chimchar as her starter Pokemon is fresh since most people I know would have picked Piplup instead. The Chimchar has an ego to match its strength. I'm curious how Inyssa will bond with such a willful Chimchar.
Story: Beyond the realm of Pokemon battles, Inyssa grapples with a past she seeks to bury, a layer of complexity that adds to the narrative of world-building. The mystery surrounding Inyssa's sibling, Shadi, is drip-fed through occasional flashbacks. The narrative deftly navigates these emotional depths without resorting to info dumps, which is a huge plus for me.
Style: The story has seamless pacing, which maintains a steady rhythm throughout. The battle and action sequences of the Pokemon fights are very clear and descriptive. So far nothing crazy has happened yet, but I'm looking forward to how these Pokemon are going to combine various movements for better visual effects.
Grammar: There are no glaring issues as of reading it now. No mistakes that detract me from enjoying the story fully. It's a perfection!
Overall: The story promises a compelling blend of Pokemon battles, heartfelt character development, and immersive storytelling. Give it a go! - JustiNepomucenoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just WOW. Initially skeptical, as fanfiction isn’t typically my go-to, but this is just something else, it's not about living in a pokemon world, it feels more like pokemon living in our world.
Let's start with what I think needs some work: all chapters have sentences that end with a comma, nothing that affects the writing or the story, but it's noticeable. And each chapter openings seems to jump around different times or parts of the main storyline. To be honest, the 1st one left me quite puzzled, maybe it's clarified in subsequent chapters of the story. By the 2nd chapter the opening changed to flashbacks, which started to make a bit more sense later on (without giving away spoilers). However, as the story progressed, these sections appeared to shift focus yet again, this time to other segments of the main storyline. I got the impression that these pieces were building up to a pivotal moment by revealing past events, but then the narrative would suddenly shift elsewhere. This constant back and forth between past and present, along with shifts in the storyline, created a bit of confusion for me.
The story and characters are truly captivating! It's worth noting that you don't need to be a Pokémon fan to get into this narrative because it doesn't solely focus on that aspect. Pokémon exist in this universe and engage in battles as part of striving to be the best, but that's just the backdrop. The core of the story revolves around the MC and their encounters with Team Galactic. And let me tell you, when I say Team Galactic is ruthless, I mean they are genuinely menacing. From the get-go, it's clear they're the antagonists, yet the MC and we, the readers, are only gradually uncovering the extent of their malevolence, which is both intriguing and terrifying.
As the story moves forward, the MC's character development is remarkable. The author hints at her troubled past without revealing too much, creating an aura of mystery. You can feel she's hiding the pain, she's battl - KT CorbettRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I honestly don't know much about Pokemon besides having seen Detective Pikachu, so I wasn't sure what to expect going in. I was delighted to find a story with a likable protagonist and surprisingly deep character exploration. I can also tell that the author has reimagined the game's story and characters in a more realistic and adult context. I never would have imagined a scene where a Pokemon trainer has to tell her alcoholic mother that she's leaving on a Pokemon journey, but now that that I've seen it, I love it.
My only issue through the first few chapters is Barry. He's not unbearable, but the feels a bit flat for the amount of space he takes up in the narrative. Hopefully he'll get some depth as things go on.
All in all, a very exciting read. I'd love to see the author try an original setting sometime, but this definitely a story worth reading. - LazieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This fiction brings back memories to this crab. Memories of the days when this crab wrote fanficton set to the Golden Sun series instead of original fiction. This crab sees many things that he remembers when writing fanfiction present here.
The purpose of fanfiction is to take a familiar story and breath new life into it, and that is precisely what Inyssa has done to the Diamond/Pearl installment of the Pokemon series. The fun in fanfiction is taking the simpler stories and giving new meaning to the interactions and this story does that very well. From battles to context, the world comes alive in the text. It also severly calls into question the nature of pokemon fights, as the brutality of the fights is brought more alive than it ever could in the games. Pokemon origins had a similar vein that it went down, and can really make the reader understand how horrible the actual reality of this world would be when taken as it is.
This fiction is very well done, on all four traits. Grammar is on point, as is to be expected. Inyssa (the character, not the author) is also well fleshed out with her dark secrect past hidden by slow reveals over the chapters. The story is a page-turner, but thankfully for readers, updates are daily.
All in all, good story. Read it or I'll send a haunter to haunt you until you do! - cookieBRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great start! I love the author’s writing style and I couldn’t spot any grammar issues. Non-linear storytelling is not easy to pull off but the author makes it work and it’s easy enough to follow here.
One criticism I might have is that dialogue and character interactions can be a bit anime-like at times which is not inherently an issue but just the way the story is.
Overall, if this keeps up it’s going to be a great story and can’t wait for more!
