- Cool-CatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’ve been reading this story for quite some time, and I’ve been waiting patiently for this author’s work to get published.
It's a wonderful tale that feels like it slots in perfectly with the Xianxia canon. Amatsera knows his stuff when it comes to genre and was diligent in crafting the story. The prose flows like the wind, with rapid gusts of action and gentle moments of contemplation. It is one of those stories you can sit down and consume in one sitting if you are not careful.
The story is immaculate. The character’s motivations are clear and his goals are set. Many writer’s fall into the trap of “and then” in story building, but Amatsera keeps the story flowing with twists and ramifications through each beat that build upon every action the character makes. Interspersed throughout are themes of adventure, sorrow and what it means to be human.
It is easy to get into the head space of the character and live there while you are reading. At the same time. Lu Chang is likable, relatable and smart. Throughout the narrative you get to see him learn, grow and change along with the refinement of his cultivation.
The grammar is immaculate. I’m sure there will always be a stray comma or typo in any story (this review included), so I can’t fault him for that. If anything I fault myself and other advance reviewers.
Give it a shot. You won't regret it. - NecrungusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Even though there are humorous moments, the style is serious and realistic. The pacing is fast but steady, nothing overstays its welcome, the action feels lively and fresh, and everything presented makes sense within the confines of the setting. When I say realistic, I mean that this isn’t campy in any way: from the characters to the world-building, it all feels thought-out and well written. The perspective stays tightly following the MC as well, so as readers it’s like we’re experiencing the world at the same time as the character. That style choice may not be for everyone or every story, but personally it makes me connect on a deeper level with the world and the characters; I also think it works perfectly for this novel.
Speaking of world-building, the answer is simple: it’s great. The author takes a strong “show not tell” stance to fleshing out the world, and that is always something I look for when trying a new story. I don’t want to hear about the world, I want to EXPERIENCE the world, and that is done well here. It is gritty and brutal at times, while also being capable of beauty and inspiring awe elsewhere. One huge plus for me is that the setting itself feels grounded and easily capable of imagining. Is it larger than life at times? Yes, of course. But nothing so far outside the realm of existence as to be impossible to properly imagine.
The characters must be one of my favorite parts of the whole novel. They are written in a lifelike and realistic way. They don’t feel fake or one dimensional: I love the protagonists, I hate the antagonists, I feel conflicted about the same characters the MC feels conflicted about. There is reasoning behind why the characters are WHO and HOW they are, and they have actual depth. It is genuinely refreshing.
The story itself makes sense and is well written. It is subtle in a good way that doesn’t feel overbearing or like it’s progressing for the sake of progression. It is very character driven and I think the pacing is perfect - vinsoni10Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0An immersive experience from the beginning, incredibly bingeworthy and easy to follow. If you are looking for dramatic fights and high stakes this is for you. Trouble around every corner and ill omens on the wind. This is my first xianxia-type story unless you count atla I guess? But definitely an enjoyable ride so far I can't wait for the next chapter to drop so that I can keep reading.
- NavieRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Nothing is perfect but I think with time this one will touch on the level of great story telling, I don't find it hard to read and the author does a great job of portraying the thoughts and feelings.
with time I believe those interactions would just need some more polishing but it's a good read nun the less so give it a try.
