- OctavianedmondRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Will this be continued? Any news on Mr Vii ?
I liked it alot, mostly how detailed it is in terms of action plan.
Plus it has lots of unexpected events and is not instant power like many others.
Additionally, it is well thought in terms of side characters and they bring real value towards his journey.
I also like cultivation so ... :)) - Apropos_Of_CrowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Calculating cultivation is exactly what it says on the tin.
Calculated cultivation, with a unique system of said cultivation, with each stage building off each other in a quite literal way.
With a well written world, and a clever concept, the only thing holding it back are the characters.
Or to be specific. The lack there of.
The characters in Calculating Cultivation are basically caricatures. With little to no reason to get attached too, or care about, almost all of them. They tend to just sort of exist, like robots all trying to trick each other into thinking theyre humans. A human face, but with nothing truly behind it.
That, unfortunately, includes the protagonist. With little to no reason to care about him, or root for his success.
Except, unlike most other charactersin the novel, he actually has a personality. Just not a pleasant one. With him coming off as arrogant, narcissistic, and perpetually unsatisfied.
Definetely doesn't help that he seems to have a distinct lack of a moral compass.
All in all, the story and setting are nice, but are overshadowed by the total lack of emotion, feeling, or self awareness that the characters portray. - AquariiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There are few stories that grab me as much as this one does. The main Character somewhat breaks the mold, but that is a good thing. He is calculating, as the title suggests.
things progress rather quickly in the story, but the author does it in a way that gives a great view of how brutal the pursuit is to power. This story also presents a lot of great ideas and story elements that never overstay their welcome. There is something unique about it.
The stort always kicks up a notch before you are bored, and the world is very interesting and large in scope. This world of cultivation is brutal, but in a way that is funny and amusing to read. Resources are everything, and those more powerful gladly exploit the weak. The main character has to use his acumen to fight through. Some of the bariers in this cultivation story are so outrageous that you cant help but laugh at it.
The quality of the story never diminished over all the 70 chapters, only gets better, very rare on this website.
Please give this story a chance, and take enjoyment from a main character that is not overly emotional (still good though) while overcoming enormous odds. I am always looking forward to the next chapter. Great job author. - Carson6319Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Calculating cultivation is an excellent read for anyone looking for an entertaining way to explore or learn helpful life skills. The first book's worth covers the MC's development of a business empire as a means to accrue resources for their cultivation. The author explores the flaws in the mainstream concept of "isekai future knowledge makes money making easy". Instead they introduce a range of habits and practices that alot of real world self help books promote. Ideas like working backwards from an end goal, planning then background mulling before replanning, and daily goals to break down massive tasks are just some of the basic ones.
The narrative is engaging though it's focus on the practicals does mean that characters outside the MC can feel 'under developed' from a fictional works point of view. Characters do have goals and ambitions but their exploration is limited by the MC perspective. Given his inner focus this is often very surface level acquaintances.
Post the first book's worth (about 20 chapters) the work becomes 'diluted'. I would recommend it just for those who enjoy xianxia weak to strong.
The story shifts from building businesses to cultivating in a sect. At this point the story changes drastically and becomes alot more mainstream. The author thought-out planning is still present but the ridiculous goal set by the MC means the habits by themselves are no longer enough. As such adventures with 'heaven defying'' luck and 'plot armor' become increasingly relied upon. This really moves away from what was a great message on learning and practicing certain behaviours.
Whilst still very enjoyable I feel like the MC walking down the more conventional path of cultivation would have been more rewarding to read and inline with the initial work. The story promotes failure in cultivation (in this world) is primarily a limitations of well used time not one of luck. Where others failed because of their lack of dedication or preplanning he could still have fou - CulainRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love this story! It has an intelligent MC who acts logically, in an isekai story where he's not the first and so can't take earth tech and revolutionise the world.
Following our MCs journey to immortality, we see the difficulties faced when you decide to take the most complex, heroic and extreme approach to cultivation creating herculean challenges and a need to navigate through them.
On the constructive side the characters aren't super well fleshed out and feel a little 2 dimensional. The cultivation descriptions are great but do go on a little at times.
Overall an excellent enjoyable story, one of only two stories that I know the release dates for...Tuesday and Thursday (my time - probably Mon & Wed for you). So you'll see me on a Thursday being excited I get the next update so soon and dissapointed that I have to wait 5 days for the next release. - DoktorPrimatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Take a peak behind the curtain, and see the truth of the cultivation world! Beware.
A great story, written to completion.
Following young Yuan Zhou as he unravels the secrets of cultivation and the truth behind Cultivation Stories of all kinds - a dark truth.
The story is an amazing piece of work, that stays true to the classical cultivation novels, the originals, yet also mantains the western feel that a transmigrated / reincarnated earth boy brings to the table. 10/10 on that.
The character, Yuan Zhou, grows throughout the story, and his mentality changes his perspective, just as the more he realises and sees changes him. And I feel that throughout the story, my own perspective on cultivation changes too. A wonderful realisation, and a great kick to get from reading. Enlightenment!
Grammar is generally really great, sometimes there a few missed and misplaced words, but the overall flow of the story usually generates enough momentum that my eyes glide right over and through it. A sign of a great story, right there.
All told, I would definitely recommend this book. It has been a true pleasure to read and it pains me that it has come to an end. Alas, all good things must, I support.
I have nothing more to say, I do not widh to spoil any new readers too much about what they might read, should they choose to, and I have but my most heartfelt thanks to give to the author for letting us read such a great work, and even for free, here on Royal Road
Thanks a lot
-Dok - DraddockRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reincarnated college student has to learn cultivation in isekai world. Simple concept that's often repeated, but all lies in the execution. You can take the well trod path for story building as long as you do it well. Conversely our protagonist tries to innovate and make his own path within the story.
---- If you like introspective analytical protagonists that plan ahead, this is for you! ----
Now, so far some might say the protagonist is a bit of a Gary Stu, but I ask people to consider that he only has a few main advantages so far. Slight spoilers ahead.
He can see the cultivation motes, and he has business experience from college studying, and of course the reincarnator standard of being aware as a baby. He's not super strong (yet). He uses those few advantages to try to get ahead of the curve for cultivation. He faces stumbling blocks along the way that he has to overcome. He plans ahead and uses patience when necessary. Things don't instantly work out for him.
Also based on the author's other work, I don't expect the protag to end up as a Gary Stu. The Systemic Lands is pretty grim dark, so I know Mister Vii knows how to make conflict interesting. - T_the_ScepticRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Written by a Patreon Reader after 64 chapters
MC is reincarnated and wants to survive and live a good life, he really wants to live forever or at least far longer than a humans ususally do, he is curious, calculating and really unlucky. His emotions and desires are restricted by constant pressure caused by being on a timer - timer starting from one human life and getting to a lifetime of a civilization while still being really strict.
Overall its not for everyone, it's not really typical fantasy novel - there aren't many close relationships but those that are are deep and meaningfull. Cultivation in this book is a science in itself that the author thought thru really well and supplimented with few graphs and detailed descriptions. - HanChenYouRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am pretty enthused about this work so far. I like the idea of motes of qi floating around every few hundred meters that a beginning cultivator painstakingly collects.
I really like the world building that makes the world generally stable in a way that makes a small child with the right ideas unable to upend the world order.
I really like the story so far, and am itching to see where it goes.
Style: I like the style of the story. The prose meshes decently well.
Story: the general arc of the story is fairly typical for a xianxia story, while improving on a lot of tropes and also rationalizing the world somewhat
Grammar: This story is edited a lot more carefully than ones that have been written more quickly. I think there is a marked improvement here, and the grammar is fully not distracting.
Characters: I like how the characters in the story react in a realistic way to the MCs general path and plan. There is disappointment, there is surprise, and there is happiness.
I like the spontaneity of other non-MC characters, and that they clearly have their own agency, even in making decisions that are an inconvenience or a perceived betrayal of the MC.
I especially like that even when the MC gets some benefits from his constitution, others do not reverence him for them. His path is considered to be one that has some significant benefits in the short term, but 99% chance of massive drawbacks in the future. Thus, he is treated as a precocious, yet ephemeral quantity in the lives of the cultivators around him.
I also really appreciated the reasonable outlook that LiFu took when examining the MCs cultivation plan. "There is significant value here that I want to ask you to test and then return back to us and report."
