- ButtopiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5So the first the thing that stood out to me in reading this was the talking bird reveal, mostly just because at the time of writing this I have a similar thing going on, which may make me a bit more partial towards the story in my review than anyone else would be to it.
I think the story is setting up well, and only some minor grammar issue nitpicks that I spotted. And these may even be stylistic choices on the author's part as they are paragraph tags with quotes and the like,
The characters themselves are great, they come across as alive within the story, but they my gripe with style is part of how they are written, not so much the characters themselves.
Which gets into my style rating, for example in one of the chapters, the name Makarios is said over and over, and this is likely due to the way paragraphs are broken apart. In some cases, super short lines would work better as part of dialogue tags, and the jump around like this makes it hard to follow points of view at times. This is nothing I think some editing and revision can't fix, though.
So, all that said, if you want a slow burn fantasy romance, then this is almost certainly for you. - Ethan Y CottonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I do so enjoy getting to see a perspective alien to humans like we do with Lord Seven.
The motivations of wildly different creatures are so fascinating to consider. To me that is the main draw of By Crown and Claw so far.
tldr: check this one out to see what it might be like to be a dragon with more power than humans can imagine, as well as a princess who really likes her perfume hobby, always chasing the next interesting scent.
now the ratings:
style: so far this is less of an adventure and more of a drama. The pov goes back and forth a bit between the dragon and the princess and you get to see what each is thinking and what motivates them. It’s an interesting setup and I look forward to how it plays out.
story: the princess likes scents. It is little motivations like that which can spiral into something like a dragon crashing your party. That may not make sense to you now, but, that is the sort of thing that this story brings on. I sort of want the drama aspect to continue rather than some adventure, it is an interesting path we have set out on.
grammar: there are only minor issues, mostly punctuation, which you only notice if you are looking for them. Nothing to worry over as a reader.
character: the main characters each have different motivations, but it largely boils down to curiosity. Our princess is always looking for new scents and finds herself in a bit of danger because of it. Our dragon is interested in the legendary artifacts and makes an enemy of the king for it. Curiosity isn’t just lethal to cats you know.
verdict: give it a try, it’s very different from what you are used to I can promise that. - GrumpsterRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0By Crown and Claw (I love the title btw) is a wonderful high fantasy story surrounding Oleandra, a Princess, embroiled with both intrigue and politics as she is thrown into the deep end with the dragon Lord Seventh.
The style and the wording has perfected the art of worldbuilding, with an incredibly tense atmosphere that is prevalent throughout the scenes, made extra juicy with the humour, drama and especially the chaos of the Ballroom.
Haven't read much of this but I will say that Princess Oleandra is a character driven by both defiance against her duties as a Princess and her own ambitions - a character that works well with Lord Seventh, the oozing arrogance , curiosity and creepings of humanity delving into what can be said to be an incredibly nuanced character.
With incredibly characters, comes a unique story that focuses on Oleandra, her passion and especially the story that embroils chaos around her, with high stakes that maintain tension throughout the story, with a layer of mystery that comes along with that.
Grammar is strong, with exceptional clarity provided throughout the prose, structure and the story's tone. Dialogue is natural and flows well with the scenes and character interactions. There are little issues with that.
