Description

To the gods, humanity is but a pawn in an endless war.

Eliphaz knows this, yet accepts the blessing of a vengeful god obsessed with challenging the Highest, the One being that lords over all others. Powerful abilities beyond any mortal lie within his reach, but at what cost?

For war is brewing, a clash between ancient forces that threatens to tear reality asunder. Eliphaz has a role to play in this conflict; he is the divine instrument by which the lesser gods will be destroyed—that is, if he does not fight against his own fate.

Briarswornis the first arc of The Book of Eliphaz, a litrpg that takes place in the ancient Near East and is inspired by the Book of Genesis and other ancient mythologies.

This right here, this is how you write a compelling prologue. Background information is introduced to make the premise believable, it gives a preview of LitRPG aspects to come, and sets up a future conflict for the storyline to follow. The prose is of a high quality, and technical writing is clean. I have very high hopes for this story, and I am excited to read more soon!

First, I would highly suggest reading the prologue of this story, as it is brilliant and could stand on its own as a one-shot. This is the very beginning of it:
In the beginning, there was nothing. At least, that’s what everyone says. Though we have reasons to doubt this—for in the beginning there was only the One who created the world, and therefore who can verify what this first, highest being—He who is called Elohim—truly did, for he was the only one there to witness it.
So can we take him for His word? Because to say that there was nothing before the light is false, for before there was light, there was the System. Because clearly the System existed outside of Elohim, for it was the System that granted Him the name of The Highest, and which boosted his Strength, Stamina, Agility, and Spirit stats to such an extraordinary degree that He could create the world and shape it, despite the System that lorded over him.
Briarsworn follows Eliphaz, a young man in the ancient Middle East, on an Earth that is similar to our own but where the gods are alive and dangerous creatures lurk in the shadows. Eliphaz's family holds the blessing of a god, and the story begins with that blessing being stolen. Un-chosen and unlucky, the MC soon finds himself at the mercy of bandits.
But a goddess intervenes, saving his life and marking him as her own -- Briarsworn. This goddess is powerful and crafty, and the MC doesn't fully understand her motives, but power is power, and he's excited to use her blessing to do good. But Eliphaz soon learns that "doing good" can lead to disastrous consequences, and we follow him and his seer companion Narina as they hunt down a terrible monster.
This adventure sparks the beginning of Eliphaz's rise to power under his goddess.
The characters in the story, especially minor characters, are described vividly. At times the dialogue can feel a bit stilted / archaic, but I believe it's an intentional choice (since the story takes place in an ancient setting)
