Brewing Bad (Fantasy Isekai Light LitRPG)
Community Rating
Description
Lucas is a dick, but you would be too if you died in a meth lab explosion and found yourself in a fantasy world. Now, with only his ruthlessness and an ever-increasing body of alchemical knowledge, he has to make his way in this new world, because being poor sucks no matter where you are. What’s going to happen? He has no idea, but he isn’t dying again, because he already knows the afterlife is pretty much bullshit.
This story is currently completed. I plan to write a follow on trilogy in the same world with the same characters, but the current story arc is complete.

- Bigboi8Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far not a lot has been happening but I have high hopes that where it is going is somewhere good. The writing is solid, no blaring grammar errors, and the characters aren't sock puppets. If you are looking for a fantasy story with characters that don't all have the same voice and with a chance that some interesting things might happen soon just read this one.
- StarbugRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This isnt a story for anyone who's looking for an overpowered character who suddenly transported to a new world and finds that their biggest problem is being unbelievably wealthy or attractive. Brewing bad is about alchemy, the cost of living, naive aristocrats, and making a profit. It's a great story for anyone who likes their characters flawed and enjoys visiting imaginary worlds that actually have problems.
- deideiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well, the mc is sort of a mess, but the story overall is interesting and the messy mc uplift the story, so it's a win I guess for the reader.
What you can expect:
good storytelling
the mc stays true to his character
the element told in the storytelling are relevant
characters are well fleshed out
each characters have their own set of motivation/personality and some do not mix well together (interesting character interaction)
some mistakes are made and mc sometimes suffer some setbacks
In short, I think that it is rather well written and if you like it or not will really depends on if you like the story rather than how it is told... - jon mckendryRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's fun watching someone competent deal with people that are better off finding a different trade.
Can't wait for him to find some competent help though so he can really get the ball rolling on his little operation.
Also I really love the main characters personality.
Filling out remaining word count. - wolfgang784Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Its a pretty entertaining read so far.
The title had me a lil leery as I usually avoid stories that are pure nonsense for the sake of nonsense since they often end abruptly or get dropped, but this isnt one of those even though I sort of thought it would be from the title.
Also, it still makes perfect sense even if you have never watched Breaking Bad. Ive never seen a single episode, so I might be missing some references or little things, but I havent found myself lost at anything.
Solid writing as well. Havent noticed a lot of spelling or grammar mistakes or odd word choices or nothin. - Leahcim ZanathaxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Lets get the important things out of the way. This story isn't really all that much like Breakin' Bad... it shares some themes but that's about it.
That's not a bad thing. Brewin' Bad is pretty damned awesome!
It is a mildly interesting variation on the Isekai genre, although the MC is the furthest thing in the world from being the wildly OP character from most Isekai.
Lucas, the MC, is an... interesting person. He's certainly not Walter White. Walter is a very smart man who makes mistakes from lack of knowledge and trusting when he maybe shouldn't. So far, Lucas is just... not the brightest bulb and strongly in self-denial.
Its all humorous and well-written, as well as being a lot more interesting than most Isekai!
Give it a try, I think its pretty great! - drandreasRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story starts out great, right into some drug and gang mayhem. I really enjoyed the first book and the twists and turns therein. There are some light LitRPG elements that become more prevalent later in book 1and 2 but it is very light on the numbers so don't worry about that. While the start is very breaking bad style, book 2 diverges a bit into its own unique path and breaks away from the breaking bad theme to a more traditional Fantasy story. Good stuff.
- RavioliSpaceshipRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I'm not sure how long I'll stick with it because it's not the sort of story I typically go for, but it's entertaining and I can firmly recommend it if you're open to stories about criminals and the drug trade.
Grammar score took some hits. There are errors in most chapters, mostly misused words (some from mispelling a word as a different word, some from replacing words with similar sounding words) and fairly frequent instances of partial and garbled sentences, likely from rewrites. A passthrough from an editor could probably resolve it pretty quickly.
The style is pretty solid; nothing especially groundbreaking, but the author uses a fittingly quick pace to keep the tension up and the light usage of gamelit content feels appropriate to the story focus.
The story itself feels compelling. An interesting premise was established; some overarching goals were set for the main characters early on so you can see progress being made (or not, when things go wrong); and the author has kept up a steady stream of plans, payoffs, and consequences, along with unexpected dilemmas. My one major complaint is that the plot hasn't felt like it's taken any big risks or tried to break new ground, but it's still early days, so that may change. My one minor complaint is that the universe feels a little small--like, magic and Wild Talents exist, but other than the main character's alchemy, they've been pretty minor parts of the environment; and the city feels like it's wall to wall crime and corruption, although that may be an intentional limit of the main character's point of view.
The characters are entertaining, but kind of one-note. The addict's wheedling and useless; the love-struck young woman is too innocent to notice things; the dwarf is gruff and calculating; the half-orc is proud and violent. The main character has more depth, but it doesn't get to shine as much as it could since he interacts with folks who aren't complicated.
All in all, pretty good! Room for improvement, and gi - Juniper JonesRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5While the first several chapters are well-written and executed, as the story wears on more and more errors crop that make it nearly unreadable at times. Continuity errors, spelling/homophone errors, characterization inconsistencies...
This story has some real potential if you can overlook the fundamentally sexist nature of it. There are only three female characters who get any real screentime: a innocent, naive young woman; a violent, scheming woman; and a violent, scheming, horny, fat woman. Most others are just courtesans or similar.
The fact that almost all of the other women (besides the naive one) are killed, either directly or indirectly by the MC, doesn't help this.
It wouldn't be so bad if the naive young woman wasn't lied to constantly by the MC with zero reprecussions from her or from the narrative itself.
Despite how awful the MC is and how many lies he spouts, he still gets the pure, virginal girl in the end. And boy does the author go on about how innocent and pure she is. She literally has Disney princess syndrome (friend to small birds) going on. Too many cliches to count.
The obvious nod is to Breaking Bad, though it's anything but subtle, with one mentor-type character's name literally being Heisenburgle. Parts of the MC's past are brought up once and then never mentioned again, even when they would make a hell of a lot of sense. One plot thread drags on for nearly 100 chapters in what feels like a total slog instead of a tense contest of wills or a particularly difficult puzzle.
The alchemy system was interesting until about halfway through when it felt like parts of it were dropped without warning in favor of the in-universe explanation which the MC had previously decried as bullshit, forgetting about his own notes which were featured in an earlier chapter! It's as though the author wrote this system and world and then forgot his notes and couldn't be bothered to re-read his own work to remind himself, but given the lack of editing, that might jus - StrgRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I like crafting stories so this took me through most of the story. I would've probably dropped it way earlier without those elements.
The alchemy part is very underwhelming and neglected... it's just a gimmick to justify drugs so far in the story.
The things it could do kind of defeat the whole premise... why bother selling drugs when you could sell litteral liquid strength.
The main weak point of the story for me is the main character. He keeps changing behaviour whenever it's needed to "advance" the plot.
The grammar goes way down by the chapter I reached so that would be a con too if you care about it. (Some parts are really, and I mean really bad. Most of it is okay though)
The premise is interesting enough and I feel like the story has potential but I just can't be asked to keep going waiting for that.
P.S. women are basically just trophies that can do no wrong and that is what made me decide to finally drop this.
