Bone to Pick by this new author is an impressive debut that sets itself apart from typical isekai with its dark, Viking-inspired world and a unique take on necromancy. Having read the first six chapters, I’m already invested in the story and eager for more.
Fresh Concept: The protagonist, John, isn’t your standard overpowered hero. He’s summoned into this brutal world not as a warrior but as a necromancer—and not even a strong one at first. His struggles to grow and prove himself make his journey relatable and rewarding to follow.
Tactical Magic: Necromancy is more than summoning skeletons here; it’s a skill that requires creativity and strategy. John’s use of the system to adapt to the Viking-like environment is clever, and the magical mechanics feel grounded in the world.
Immersive Setting: Frostholm and the surrounding icy wilderness are vividly described, pulling you into a world where survival is a daily battle. The Norse flavor feels authentic without being overwhelming.
Character Development: John’s dynamic with Freya, the fierce hunter,  adds depth to the story. Their interactions bring both humor and heart, and it’s satisfying to see John slowly earning her respect.
Pacing: The early chapters have moments where system explanations slightly slow the action. While these are important for setting up the rules, trimming them down a bit would make the narrative flow smoother.
Villager Dynamics: While the setting of Frostholm is engaging, some of the villagers blur together. Adding a few standout personalities would enhance the stakes and make the town feel more alive.
With Bone to Pick, this author has delivered a strong opening to what could become a standout series. The balance between gritty survival, tactical necromancy, and Norse-inspired lore is refreshing. While there’s room for growth, the foundation laid in the first six chapters is rock solid.
If you’re a fan of isekai with a darker edge or stories that emphasize clever problem-solving over raw power,

I'm pretty sure the author repeated the same exact sentence like 4 times as to why he picked a stat to level. If the author would clean that up, I'd have probably enjoyed the story more. Also, the repeated warnings of dire consequence just didn't feel that dangerous.  Maybe it's because there wasn't enough time to build up the threat.  Outside that, I did enjoy the system and skill options.

    1. This novel was most likely generated by AI, and its chapers score over 20% when tested using zeroGPT. Despite this, the author has not included the relevant warnings in the description.
    2. As such, it is highly repetitive in its structure, cuts plots at the end of the chapter and generally has an "unfamiliar" feel to it. You can observe the same structure in the novel "Of Death and Politics", which I had chat GPT make when I was bored.
    3. The concept could use some work, but it is unique, and that is the most important part about any novel.
