Black Magus

Description

What kind of realm would you choose to live in after digitizing your mind?

For Amun, that was a magical world where he could be free to learn until his end of days.

What he got was to become the living god of a vast realm in an odd universe.

A being who'd be born with the world. And later stripped of it all.

A being of juxtaposition and contradictions. A sinner and a saint. A wise sage and a genius scientist. A loving creator and a baleful explorer. An elf and a devil, living in a world of might and magic.

But all is not what it seems. Peace is fleeting. Figures loom in the light. Forms strafe through the trees. And one Amun is woefully ignorant to the ways of a realm so ripe for change. Yet he is one who cannot help but change it. So he devotes himself to forming the greatest guild the Mortal Plane has ever seen, intending to change his world and others for the better.

And yet, somewhere along the line of his undying march, Amun evolved into the being all denizens of the Mortal Plane either revered; or feared.

The Black Magus.

***This novel’s lore, story, and characters are entirely fictitious. Certain long-standing countries, institutions, organizations, agencies, public offices, etc. are/may be mentioned, but their histories and the characters involved are wholly imaginary.

This is an Odyssey-style story, meaning the pace will be relatively slow to pick up as we follow Amun throughout his life. The 'prologue' will be long, encompassing the creation of Amun's guild and magitech empire. And in that time all the intricacies of the world will be explained so that in the later parts, very little exposition will be needed when someone does something crazy.

This is also a story with an OP mc, so if that's not your style, this story may not be for you. However, this overpowered character is one who shares his power. In time, the story will shift perspectives to show the natives of this world reacting to the powerful force that is Amun and his Legions. Some will seek his help. Others will seek to harm him. Many will simply despair. More will change.

You can find more chapters of Black Magus on WN. This version, however, I consider the closest thing to a final draft.

This story is very well written with only a few typos that don't heavily detract from the experience. I was thinking to myself however, with how good the story is, why am I not attached emotionally to it?
For me this comes down to the character of the MC and his nature.  I personally find it hard to relate to some of the decisions, so while it matches his character (and is still written fantastically) the internal dissonance pulls me a bit out of the story.
Outside of that,  no major gripes, and I'm fascinated to see the world the author has created.

The main character has an atypical progression mindset - he does as most litrpg stories do and works on his own personal power, but he also has an obsession with developing his followers and the story hints strongly at empire building. If you like reading about the main character denying being altruistic while simultaneously having a savior complex, Amun has you covered.
If you like slow burn stories, prepare for a story that is slower than any you've read before. At chapter 150, the story is still in the initial "training montage" though it has had multiple phases. That said, it isn't boring, just long - it has a lot of backstory and world building explanations that significantly fluff up chapters, so if you are a world building nut like me it will be enjoyable.
On the negatives, the early backstory is a strange, and forced, attempt to tie together a fantasy story into a sci-fi world. It subtracts from the overall seriousness of the story, and makes it hard to connect sometimes. The same story, but with your typical isekai into a fantasy world backstory would be preferable. That said, it doesn't come up all that much later that the world isn't real, so it isn't that big of a deal.
Additionally, realistically the first 150 chapters could likely be condensed down to about 50-75 chapters of a similar length without losing a significant amount of information. Reading this story is a Process, and even as someone who reads entire book series in just a couple days, I regularly have to put this story down and come back after a couple hours. It is not very filled with action, though it does have it's moments, so if you want 24/7 fighting this is not the story for you.

I don't really know how rate this book. I like empire building stories, I like reincarnation or isekay stories. And this is story with both in it. But I felt there is a lot missing of what else should be in a story.
The MC is a very stoic Person, reborn after living over a 130 year before. So it makes sense, that he would focus on learning, training and planning instead of a more social existence.
But the side characters are also bland to the point of me not being able to remember which one of the three is who of his three companions. No one really feels like a person.
I can stick with a lot of exposition or conversations between characters that explain the world to us. But this was all there is. And I don't feel this will change in the chapters after the first 30 chapters.
I would have really liked to read a very long story of an OP MC building an empire. But it sadly couldn't hold my interest.

The story starts out understandable, with a lot of infodumps that are unavoidable in such a situation. It then moves onto being surprisingly good for the first 5-8 chapters. Then, I don't know what happened, but it then suddenly just becomes incredibly boring. The story mostly just consists of our MC, that loves learning, inhaling information like a fat man does cheeseburgers using his 'cheat,' chapter long infodumps that go into way too much detail become prevalent, and the stereotypical isekai mana system showcasing exactly why no one uses it for a serious story.
One of the very first things the MC does is show that he despises humanity for some reason, and says he wants to learn for the rest of eternity. It's an odd combination that makes little sense, but it makes even less sense when he's then shown abusing his 'cheat' by devouring information at an absurd pace. As someone who has lived over 100 years, and is expected to live at least 300 in this life, you'd expect he'd want to savor as much as he could and figure things out himself, but he doesn't and instead wants to be told everything. It's not even as if his 'cheat' is the ability to think extremely fast, but rather is just a perfect memory, with an automatic sort, and relevant search function.
The infodumps are actually just another form of his ridiculous need to learn. They're either in the form of an extremely long summary of what he's learned, or characters creating the infodump to feed to the MC and they happen often. It's not unbelievable our information devourer would summarize all the stories he's read, but it seems bizarre that the denizens of this world would do the exact same and to a 6 year old child no less. I've seen many try to integrate infodumps into their story, and honestly the only passable ways I've seen it done, is either sparingly, or stretched throughout the entire story as relevant, but the best way is to simply not as much as possible, because we really don't need all this informat

I really liked the beginning the first 200 chapters are a fantasy feast but after that the style changes and it becomes a mix of science fiction and fantasy which destroyed the story for me.
Another point is that after he becomes a god the tune of the story changes completely the mc is mostly portrait as a Saint who does good for the sake of doing good.
The last straw for me was when he adopted a random village girl as his daughter
And said that the vampire lady was her new mom although he made it pretty clear he hadn't any romantic interests
Another point is that the story has a marry sue as the mc he can't do no wrong non of his bad actions have any consequences and al around him are in awe of his genius.
It is sad the story was a 5 or 4.5 star till the middle of the academy arc but then it went downhill. If it was only the last bit then my rating would probably be at a 2 hto 1 stars.
I'm dropping this one it was a good ride
    Bye
