Beyond the will of Heaven

Arthur Evergreen succeeded exactly the way he was supposed to.

In a world where nanotech compatibility decided a person’s ceiling, he was born near the top. He trained. He optimized. He advanced. Promotions came. Influence followed. Everything responded to him the way a system should respond to correct input.

He felt processed for fortune.

When he died, there was no revelation. No regret. Just interruption.

He wakes in another world—steel instead of circuits, magic instead of code. People speak of Heaven’s will the way corporations once spoke of market forces: invisible, absolute, unquestioned.

Then what is a will?

Or just awareness of inevitability?
