Description

The sky is broken. The world is dying.

Maia and her father, Matthias, survive in the Wastelands, scavenging forgotten ruins and taking contracts on roaming monsters. But there's more to their lives than just survival. They're scravs—gifted great powers but bound by Fatebonds, divine tasks from gods long dead. Failure means death.

This is Maia's story. What dark secrets lie in her father's past? Why is his growing obsession with their Fatebonds suddenly frightening her? And most importantly—what is it that Maia must do to fulfil hers?

As shadows of the past close in and the world crumbles around them, Maia must decide whether to follow in her father’s footsteps or break free from the fate that binds them both.

Author note:

Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland world with ancient tech and forgotten powers, this story follows Maia, a scrav—a young girl gifted (or cursed) with strange abilities tie her to Fatebond. Alongside her mercenary father Matthias, Maia is drawn into a world of danger, mystery, and powerful forces beyond their control.

Beneath a Falling Skycombines elements of adventure, discovery, and deep character growth, all set against the backdrop of a crumbling world full of untold secrets. ThinkFinal FantasymeetsDunewith a bit of LitRPG flair and that focus on emotional character development you’ve come to expect from my writing.

If you’re into stories with complex characters, epic journeys, and a bit of mystery, give it a shot!

Warnings:

LitRPG & Progression System: This is LitRPG story but many of the common elements that readers of LitRPG would be familiar with are slow on arrival with many pieces of the system only coming in later chapters.

"Profanity": There's a bit of cursing in this, if you don't like that, don't read it.

This story is set in a dying world that is filled with lots of science fantasy elements, reminding me of Star Wars and mixing it with good old post-apocalyptic storytelling.
The main characters make money by taking pieces from vehicles inside a ship from a (not so?) ancient war in a battered world. The magic system seems tied to the fatebonds that the characters keep casually dropping hints about, but even the characters don't seem to understand these powers very well, building an intriguing mystery around the magic system.
From what I have read of the story so far, I want to read more. The author's style paints a (not) verdant picture of this alien world.
I dinged grammar half a star for some weird tenses in chapter three, the first flashback chapter. Otherwise, it's been fairly clean.
The story is super interesting. I really want to know more about these defeated gods that the author has teased and the Eldritch Horror we have seen.
As for characters, I am definitely having fun following this rebellious teenager and her father in this broken world's setting.
I'm afraid that saying too much more will ruin the story, so if you've read the review this far, you should just go read the story.
I look forward to reading more!

This is a cleanly written and compelling story. The beginning doesn't resemble a litrpg much, but there's a note that says that picks up. Great read for an immersive adventure.
I am writing this as part of a review swap, but will continue to follow the series.
    What I liked:
Writing style is detailed with lots of sights and sounds and colors and smells of the world. It feels like a real place.
Characters are unique with good descriptions and lots of personality.
Dialogue is real and fits the characters well.
Including soundtrack for what is playing is a cool way of making an even more immersive experience.
Perspective shift between characters is a good choice, and gives valuable insight to who these people are.
Scene and setting is very cool, with easily visualized descriptions of dystopian future and its tech.
Grammar and spelling is immaculate, seems like a published book.
Plot is clearly well outlined. The author knows where this is going and has lots of little mysteries and cliff hangers that need exploring.
    What I disliked:
Could have more action. There are numerous opportunities where characters talk and communicate necessary info, but the characters are not physically engaged in anything beside talking. More dynamic and would see more of characters if they talked while doing things.

This review comes after reading the first seven chapters of Beneath a Falling Sky. I apologize for the spoilers contained within.
    Story
This story follows Maia and her father Matthias as they scavenge for valuable Verdant tech to survive the barren world they live in. There are also occasional flashbacks that cover Matthias’s past struggles. The two end up fighting things called scuttlers and other shadowy creatures. We see just how much Matthias has changed over the last 16 years.
    Style
This story is a post apocalyptic tale that deals with things like survival and parenthood. The overall tone could be called a "reflective adventure." But there are also moments of quiet and beauty (like when they take the plant cuttings). The POV is third person, shifting between the father and daughter. The dialogue here is perfect between the duo. Each of the characters brings with them such unique character traits.
    Grammar
I don't usually take away points in this category until there are egregious errors. Since I take in all of my RR content on the app's audio function, I don't tend to notice small errors. This story sounded good to me.
    Characters
The MCs are so well done (I mentioned that before). Maia’s a bit defiant while Matthias is wise and weary. There are also supporting characters like Lani and Kyra that add some depth to Matthias' past and some warmth to the present. The only other character that I can remember is the shadow creature. It helps the reader see the kinds of creatures that are in the world, but also hints at Maia's pull toward power.
I know it sounds like my favorite parts should be the action scenes, but I actually liked the description of the Red Market (in both the flashback and the present). It is a chaotic oasis in the wasteland, teeming with people. This is a fun peek at a much larger and more dangerous world. 5/5
