- ZaafielRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a hilarious take on cultivation. The main character is a regressor from the heights of power and now back at the start. She may be back at the start of cultivation, but she still has the attitude of an old monster. The story moves along nicely. This is not a slow burn. If you like OP main characters, this is a good choice. Almost every chapter has made me laugh.
- BigScreenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has an incredibly strong start.
So far, the various characters that have been introduced all are beleivable and interesting. None of them seem like silly caricatures as we often see in Xianxia, and all of them have the foundation for strong charcter arcs in the future. It simply reamins to be seen whether ot not the author can develop them well.
The world of Be The Icy Beauty is faithful to the roots of the Xianxia genre without being complety unoriginal likeso many other stories, or so different to the point of being unrecognizable. The cultivation system starts off pretty standard but seems to be pretty uniqe at the higher levels(From what we have seen).
Already there are several interesting mysteries afoot, which I won't spoil. We have a few clues from which we can infer things from, which I actually like. Several times there have been events in the story that go mostly unexplained, with only some subtle clues to go on, and the author trusts the reader's intelligence to figure out what is going on, unlike some stories which simply directly state everything and treat the reader like a baby. Of course, I don't mean to imply this is to be read as a good mystery story, becuase it's not quite that good. It's more like a fantasy with some decent mystery elements so far.
I will change my reveiw should the story get noticably worse in the future, but I remain optimistic that it will not. - voice of reasonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The highlight of the story is the protagonist and some of the side characters. The protagonist herself is a typical Xianxia young mistress but with the knowledge to back up (some of) the arrogance. This leads to various highly amusing encounters with several other side characters.
Overall the story is well written and is quite absorbing. It follows several tropes but is self aware and uses those tropes to excellent comedic effect. It's definitely worth a try. - leafblazerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I wouldn't say that Bing has a "kind" side to her, but she does know how to make her people strong, and does not betray them or discard them easily. Also I love Xi Fu as the lazy spear cultivator, and the Spirit Dog cultivator. Her faction have interesting and distinct personalities. Her arrogance doesn't bother me since pretty much all the cultivators around her have never come close to reaching what she did, and she's existed for about tens of thousands of years. And she's keeping that a secret. Thank goodness she doesn't act like a child! I think this arrogance mostly comes from Bing's self confidence that she can manuever any situation, defeat anyone eventually, and most recently made the Heavenly Tribulation get concerned about her killing it. If you couldn't tell, that was a very cool tribulation scene.
This is not a deconstruction or parody of the genre, but it sidesteps the never ending face slapping, self glorification, and destruction inflicted on innocents that other stereotypical Xianxia have. Bing Meilu is too old for that shit, and too powerful to squabble for resources like that. But when people force her into these conflicts, she's the best at shutting down cultivators even with her own words. - ROTH963Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0There isn't much to say, this story is head a shoulders above the vast majority of cultivation stories I have read, it isn't as long yet, but it have a good combination of interesting cast, interesting magic system and comedy.
If I had to give one critique, is that it sometimes feel like there are a lot of plot points pilled up on each other, but so far all of them seem to lead in interesting directions, without getting in each other way and while not being explored too fast for them to distract you from the ongoing plot.
definitely recommend. - fedessRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Written at chapter 72.
I am very happy to have found this gem. Out of the maybe 50 stories I read on royalroad (that I didn't drop), this might just be my favorite one. As far as OP stories go, this is definitely my favorite one.
The author is clearly experienced and knowledgeable. The world and characters make sense and are taken seriously despite the OPness and great shameless humor. It reminds me of A Will Eternal by Er Gen. This story might not be as polished in all aspects as his, one of China's most famous writers, but it honestly does not differ much, and in terms of enjoyment it is equal at the very least.
- The style is a pleasure to read.
- The grammar is good, just has some typos here and there.
- For the story a lot is happening and foreshadowed, and the pace is fast yet not rushed.
- The characters are easy to remember and their goals make a real impact on the story.
The only weak part to me was an emotional chapter that I didn't feel. Without spoilering, I don't mean the tragedy or the aftermath, which were well written, but the chapter where some not all that important characters have a big emotional moment. It felt like it was supposed to hit you in the feels but missed the mark. Maybe a fluke, maybe a flaw.
I can only hope the author keeps writing and for more people to find this. - Sondrex76Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story essentially starts with our main character who is (but according to the story itself, not literally) a former god that has been taken back to when they were mortal, but retaining the vast repertoire of knowledge they have acquired during the eons they have existed.
She now has to cultivate and slowly regain her lost power.
This of course means that she has more potential, and knowledge, than anyone else, yet at the moment must thread carefully so as not to incur the wrath of anything currently too powerful for her to deal with.
The MC is morally neutral, rational and in general does what is good for those who work for her in the long term. She's not evil, but she's also not good.
I am bringing this up because if you're looking for a morally good MC or one that is so ruthless they're basically evil, this is probably not the story for you.
The MC is ruthless, and I have no doubt they will be willing to do horrible things to survive and grow, but seems to actively seek to be balanced in their actions.
There are side characters that are pretty morally good, but they're not the focus, and if they will keep their morality is not something we can tell at this point.
I am looking forward to reading more of this, the cast grows more interesting as we move forwards and while the MC is a bit bland in some ways, that is sort of part of their character and I think works rather well with the colorful side-characters she interacts with, who I suspect will only grow more colorful as the story goes on. - Phil276Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The title says that her temperament is icy and uncaring. I disagree. It's nasty and dismissive - and I love it! Not only that, she is also arrogant and brutal. The only thing that could enhance my enjoyment would be if I was into doms.
Joking aside, the story really is well-well written and a very believable xianxia attempt. It hits all the notes expected of a good xianxia story, but forgoes the initial period of weakness and leaps straight into face slapping and beating arrogant young masters. - HearthenstoneRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5If you haven't gotten bored with Xianxia novels and are looking for a competently written one, I recommend this. It's got a strong female MC & hits all the right notes of your typical Xianxia novel, it's writing style and general flow of the story is well done.
If I were to place any criticisms I'd like there to be more "struggle" in the MC's story, it doesn't have to be in combat it could be emotional or psychological, the problem with overpowered protags is reading about them crushing an arrogant young master after the X amount of time can get boring. I just want to see more of her as a character aside from her motivation of becoming a Paragon & rebuilding her sect, aside from her as this Ice Queen Beauty.
If for whatever reason developing her character or motivations more is a problem then I'd like to see her character dynamics with the side characters that doesn't just make the side characters her "stans" or "simps" - KobinaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The basics of the plot are familiar to most readers of the genre: time travel, protagonist advantage. What makes this work shine is the character presentation. The protagonist defies the traditional heroic morals but is still relatable even under the ethical system most xianxia employ. There are consequences for their actions even the time regression.
