Description

Percy was having a normal day at the beach, until he decided to try to waterbend like Katara from his favorite show.

Problem is, he succeeds. Now he has to figure out how to waterbend, and keep the normal people from finding out they have a waterbender in their midst.

Finding out he's actually a child of Poseidon will probably explain a few things.

Well written but the immersion is often killed either by an insistence on using real Greek words the primarily English reading audience have no chance at understanding or with ham fisted LGBT+ lessons
I do like the overall character of Percy and Triton and the premise is solid
Recommended only if you like the rainbow stuff

The story is, without question, well-written and genuinely original. The pacing is solid, the characters feel alive, and the author clearly has talent and vision. However, there’s one major thing that kept taking me out of the story — the excessive use of Greek language and the stylized “ancient” tone that comes with it.
I get it — it’s a story rooted in Greek mythology. But there’s a fine line between respecting the source and overdoing it. Here, the constant Greek letters, phrases, and mythological flourishes feel more like a performance than an enhancement. It’s as if the story is shouting, “Look! It’s Greek!” every few paragraphs. After a while, that charm wears off and turns into exhaustion.
Rick Riordan got the balance just right. He used Greek or Roman words sparingly, with purpose, giving them weight and context without drowning the reader in them. In his world, gods and demigods exist in the modern day — they use iPhones, drive sports cars, watch Netflix, and, most importantly, they speak modern English. The ancient world blends with the present, not smothers it.
Here, that sense of balance is missing. The tone leans so hard into the Greek aesthetic that it starts to feel artificial, like cosplay rather than mythology. It’s almost got “koreaboo” energy — except it’s an obsession with ancient Greece instead of K-pop. The overuse of Greek language doesn’t make the story feel more authentic; it just distances the reader from what could’ve been a more relatable, modern myth.
And then there’s Percy’s power — the so-called waterbending. It’s clearly inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender, specifically Katara’s water mastery. On paper, that’s an awesome idea — blending the fluid grace of bending with Percy’s connection to water could’ve made for something truly unique. But in practice? It’s barely relevant.
The story mentions it, sure, but it never feels meaningful. If you took away the “waterbending” entirely and replaced it with Percy’s usual canon powers, the s

I haven't ready the original Percy Jackson and only know the story from what I remember of the movie and other fanfic, but so far from what I can tell the story hasn't changed any. It's seems to be the same story with a crap load of world building added. With years of experience he couldnt change a thing. Every major plot point from what I can remember played out the same way as is did with a Percy with my experience. (It's been a long time since I watched the movie so if there are any differences then time has made me forget)
