- InyssaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0While I understand why the general reader base of this site might've not been attracted to this kind of story, I think it's criminal that it doesn't have reviews yet. It's outstanding. The plot, the characters, the prose especially, just as detailed or obfuscating when it needed to be, and working very well throughout the whole story.
There's a lot of dark stuff in here, to the point a few content warnings wouldn't be out of place, but I think it's still a must-read for those who like the more grounded, psychological types of stories that RR has to offer. Very human, I guess you could put it. - PxanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0When I first read the blurb I really hoped that it matched the story. There have been a few times where it didn't, and the story was another progression fantasy. Anxiously reading the few chapters, I discovered that, thankfully, the two things matched.
As Inyssa said this is not for everyone. I don't know any novels like this one. I guess it's a mix of Alice in Wonderland with some Silent Hill and Odyssey spiced in it?
After the initial strong incident the protagonists goes from place to place, in a land and atmosphere that swing between the mythical and the fantastical absurd. This story patterns are so bare you would be blind to not see them. The book follows more a fable like narrative as oppose to a more traditional like approach. Characters which aren't the protagonists suffer from this,
I feel like, only exception the sisters, the rest of the characters are barely skimmed over. They come, do a thing, and are gonne forever from the story. At times they seem more like archetypes than actual characters.
But the work overall is improved by gaining a weird ambience.
There are deeper meaning here, if you have the skills you could dig them out of their symbolism and mythical themes. Not that is in any form required to understand or follow the story thankfully.
The missing star is only because of some sections and dialogues which can be jarring to read, nothing that a brief rewrite can't smooth out.
I highly reccomend this story if you are looking for something a bit more strong, fantastical and weird.
4/5 Stars.
