- leafquillRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I've read the first 10 chapters and I'm loving it! Author shadowmuse has a lovely command of language and has written a rich setting; it's easy to feel like you're standing in the darkened alleyways with Runa, the main character. The ambiance is dark and cold, and Runa's loneliness seeps into the reader's bones as easily as the mist seeps into Runa's clothing.
Even in 10 chapters, it's obvious that Runa will have a good story arc. She's an intriguing character who will have many personal demons to fight as the story progresses. Friend and foe are all alike for her--the traumas she's faced make it difficult for her to trust. Of course, the fact that many people HAVE genuinely betrayed her in the past, and nearly everyone from her shadowy guild is likey to betray her in the future, doesn't really help her feel confident.
The four stars in Story might be my personal preference: I feel the story progresses extremely quickly, even feeling a little rushed at times. Others may feel differently.
The first 10 chapters have set up a strong beginning, including the first "quest" Runa will face. With any luck, she can escape from the oppresive environment that raised her, and step onto the road to healing. But somehow, I think Runa will face much darkness before she finds rest...
If you like keeping to the shadows, avoiding assassins, and fighting against cults, you're sure to like Assassin's Choice.
