"Ashes of Hope: Phoenix Rising," by C. M. Jaspers, is a dystopian science fiction thriller centered around Katerina, a woman seeking revenge against her abuser, Bruce, a leading member of the misogynistic "Cult of Seedbearers." The Cult, responsible for horrific acts against women on "New Earth" (a terraformed planet after humanity's escape from a dying Old Earth), is slowly being dismantled by a covert organization called the Phoenix Centennial. Follow along as the story intertwines Katerina's personal quest to find her daughter with the larger struggle against the cult, revealing its continued existence and infiltration of society.

Sometimes a stu post-apocalyptic setting feels played out, but the uniqueness the author brings to the genre feels like I’m reading this kind of book for the first time. The supernatural presence in the main character’s ability is subtle, but intriguing. I can’t wait to read this again and again!

The Bruce character is absolutely detestable, which seems intentional, and he really adds color to the story. James is conniving and selfish, and I’m interested to see where that character goes and how he develops. The way the world is built, the names of characters and organizations, everything seems so cohesive and organic! The spicy scenes, Meg's storyline, and how it not only keeps you guessing as to what will happen next, but also give heavy foreshadowing while intertwining character backgrounds in a way not often seen. When Ainsley was killed and stuffed into the vents, there wasn't any clarification as to what happened when she was found, as surely with three weeks to travel there would be a smell. I assume that there will be another cut scene that brings us back to explain it! Katerina’s supernatural ability is not as elaborated on as one would expect, but it adds an interesting twist to the storyline. I can't wait to see how it all ends! I know once the author has uploaded all their finished chapters, I'm going to be dying of anticipation while they write more chapters!

The way Katerina has this amazing ability that's kept pretty low-key, and that she's probably incredibly powerful and yet chooses not to use her powers makes her so bada$$! I cried when Everlea was taken from her, but not quite as much as when Katerina and the First Women were put through their ordeal with the Cult.
