- BullerRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0For somebody who likes skim-reading, going through this story was a bit hard. WIth the lack of proper variety in paragraphs, I had a few issues getting through this story quickly. This story has a good amount of potential with a premise that actually seem interesting, but it needs some slight editing before it can truly be enjoyed by the average RR reader. For now, it's an 4/5 from me.
- CKJ5Royal Road★★★★ 4.0I hope people will keep in mind this review is based on only one chapter of the story: Ashes of Hell, and it does not necessarily reflect the entirety of it. Okay, now that's out of the way, let’s get into it.
Pros:
The author makes a great first impression by giving us a first sentence that conveys the setting, mood, and situation while at the same time raising questions. The MC’s problem — being punished (burned alive) by religious types for something that probably isn’t his fault — is one we’ve seen before, but the author has added just enough to keep me interested in where the story goes.
Cons:
A few minor complaints first. There are a few clunky sentences and places where I had to reread to understand what the author was trying to say. There were also a few grammar issues, but they were of the sort easily fixed in a couple of passes of editing.
For me, the main issue was that the author spent most of the chapter telling us about Nestor’s past. The info dumping and flashing back was distracting. Rather than seeing what is happening in the present, the author seemed to be dumping his notes on Nestor’s past and biography, squandering the solid first impression and interest I had in Nestor’s situation.
Overall:
I was impressed with the setup and thought that with a bit more showing and focus on Nestor in the present and more sophisticated revealing of Nestor’s past, the author could really have something special on his hands here.
