- strigidae713Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story has great premise so far. A MC who lost his family and need to grow stronger to finally face the revenge. A little world-building thrown here and there. Nice pacing overall.
Style: it uses 3rd person perspective. My favorite perspective. Or I would say many would choose this one, so no problem here. I like how the author retell the story by using dialogue, sometimes I find hard to d. So well done to you!
Story: it follows a normal high-fantasy troop. With a bad guy to slain, a quest to follow, a goal to be scored. It checks every boxes. A nice combination of high-fantasy with LitRPG to make it more interesting. By the looks of it, I can definitely say that skill gain was not easy and needed a hardwork from the MC himself, love it!!
Grammar: being honest here. I'm not a meticulous person and don't really care much about grammar, unless it ruins the whole story. So I didn't find any major problem here. Emphasis on major.
Character: what can I say, he was thrown abruptly to the life of adventure. No one likes that, not even the MC. I could feel the MC hesitation when facing new journey ahead, so totally not going to be one-dimensional MC. - Black_SheepRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an amazing story with good pacing and unique characters that are fun to read about easy to connect with. The world building is good and woven in nicely. I'm in love with story so far and excited to see what's happens as things unfold further. Keep up the good work!!
- LireRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In a site rife with portal fantasy/isekai stories, [Arcane] — an Epic Fantasy tale — is a breath of fresh air.
I'd just like to preface this by confirming the little symbol to the right of this review.
It is, indeed, a review swap.
But make no mistake, this story was already on my reading list. It's just that the author reached out for a swap, and since I was planning to read it anyway, I thought "why not?"
It was like getting a reward for doing something you planned to do from the start.
Ah~ it feels good.
Also, I do not give anything below a 3★ (Unless they're deliberately horrible).
The way RR's rating system works, giving anything below that is just being unnecessarily cruel to someone who's putting out the work they wrote with their blood, sweat, and tears.
Style (5★):
It's pretty solid so far.
What needs to be conveyed, is being conveyed.
I also like the bits and pieces of world-building, woven with care into the narrative.
Story (5★):
The story is still in its infantile stages, since I'm reviewing this at chapter 6.
So far, it's been a pretty common plotline, with regards to epic fantasy.
Ordinary boy MC. Trouble arises. Gets a kick in the ass to take action.
Common isn't bad, though. There's a reason why cliches are cliches.
It's because they work. They are entertaining.
From what I've read, it's shaping up to be quite an interesting tale of a young boy going on an adventure with a purpose.
Grammar (5★):
There were minor mistakes. But nothing too big.
Typos. Happen.
It's just a natural law for writers.
Hence, I'll give this a five. I suggest a more thorough proofreading though.
Character (4.5★):
It's the weak point of this novel.
The characters feel a bit bland for my tastes. But I'll chalk it up to how early it is.
It's only natural that character development will come in the future.
I do like how characters actually talk as if they're not in modern times. Lots of stories — supposedly set in the medieval ages — fail at this. (including mine. lol)
Very nicel - MOROSERoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A classic fantasy story that centers on an MC whose destiny unveils when a mysterious warlock forces him to take a difficult quest of revenge. It offers a good spin on this story, with the familiar settings of the MC and their village portrayed in a lively and interesting manner.
Style: The description of the warlock and dragon is one of the highlights so far. They are portrayed as a menacing sight, and their impressive imagery creates a sense of interest as to where the story will go. While the early story is mostly setting up the MC's journey, it promises interesting action and imagery in the future. The system aspect was introduced slightly haphazardly, but is done here quite competently.
Story: The vengeance plotline so far is familiar, but it is done well. The story leaves many possibilities open, and raises many questions which will be answered later. The presentation of the basic revenge plotline is slightly direct, but it might become more nuanced over time.
Grammar: I couldn't find many issues with the grammar here.
Character: The story has a few interesting characters. The MC is illustrated through scenes and interactions which demonstrate his character. Over time, the more important characters may also stand out more. - TealiciousTeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I recommend. The epic fantasy I didn't know I was missing.
A slightly descriptive style without being purple prose. Good stuff. Fun to read.
Fun epic fantasy. That means lot of sadness, secret family histories and promises of epic quests. Ny only real issue is there is perhaps too muc dialoghe based exposition after the inciting incident. The pace became a little too slow.
Otherwise a pleasure to read.
Granmar is good. A few awkward phrases and sentences but the story can be read easily enough and understood.
Characters - damn do you feel for Linely. Can't say the rest of the characters are fleshed out, but they are well realised. They perform their functions as they should. I would say plot is placed over characters, but that works for me. Realising the epic action stacks well.
Final thoughts - No blue boxes for the litrpg stuff. *heartbreak* the loss of blue to the world is too much. - Wandering JoeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0THIS is a very well-crafted story. It has a style and shimmers of storytelling that is incredibly well done. Setting that is interesting right from the beginning, where the beginning is quite strong indeed.
Style: 3rd person view, with a plethora of descriptions. The world seems like a Godly world of medieval Europe or something? The naming scheme goes along with that. There is also the topic of classes, godly beings, and fantasy creatures that have levels like rpg. The same is for the classes, obviously, but the MC has yet to follow through with the system put in place. Plenty of the world is explained early on, while everything will probably revolve around the MC.
Grammar: I have no issues, as with most things. It reads finely with the grammar, dialogues, and motions of combats as well.
Story: So, a story of revenge? Unique enough, you think? It is not, but the setting makes up for it, with the style that works fine. So far, with the explanation and plot that happened, I had no need but to argue that I could not find any issue with the decisions the author has written.
Characters: MC has a history that I initially thought would be more mysterious, but it is not. A lot of the issues and plot are explained right from the start, through a random knight that helps our MC.
Overall: It is a kind of story that will go for any game lover or fantasy lover. I really like this because I am both, while I find nothing that even remotely bothered me in this novel. Really impressive work Author. - CKJ5Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I should start by saying I do not read many LitRPG stories, so I do not know all tropes that are in the genre. Arcane: Origins seemed to be a promising start to a grand tale. I liked that the world seemed to be fleshed and alive besides the PoVs shown so far, and I am curious where the story will take us as the author updates. The pacing seemed a little rushed to me at first, but it did make for a “page-turner” experience, so maybe the pacing is just right. I liked that there is more than one PoV, but I would suggest naming the chapters differently or adding the names of the PoV, so there is no confusion.
The only other suggestion I have in the few available chapters at this time was maybe to get a second set of eyes on it to help catch some mistakes that are easy to miss and to help improve the editing.
All in all, it is a fun, fast-paced story in a LitRPG setting. So far, we don’t know much of the overall story or the motivation or background of the characters. That is fine because that just means the author didn’t info-dump everything but got the story rolling. I am excited to see what the next chapters hold and think it is worth a read. - JEPayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great story for people who like their fantasy heavy on the action and heavier on the epic. From the get go we have dragons, spellbinders with the destructive potential of a small nuke, epic duels and family mysteries.
Style - the style is pragmatic, delivering information in an unobtrusive manner until it needs to turn a little purple for scenes with extra emotional impact. The personal scenes feel weighty and poignant, the grand battles epic and horrific. Very well done!
Story - a very well executed Chosen One. I know some people think it's cliche, but tell me Luke Skywalker and King Arthur aren't some of the most memorable protagonists to have existed. The story format, when done well, makes for some of the most incredibly epic stories we have. We have a great set up for this Chosen One story, an epic battle, profound loss and a quest for vengeance we know will likely cost the hero everything gunning right out of the gates. With hints of a broader world and conflict and apotheosis, we are set up from the get go for a story of truly epic scope and scale.
Grammar - some issues, but nothing that severely impacted on enjoyment of the story.
Character - very good! With all the action in the introduction, it was difficult for the author to quickly build the characters as believable and sympathetic, but they have done so very, very well.
All in all, this story has all the trappings of a very well executed, emotional, and epic quest for vengeance! - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5First of all, it's litrpg with [ ] format. Great stuff already. The premise isn't really that original but who cares about that when the rest of the stuff holds up decently. Excecution of the actual story seems fairly done, though I am still unsure on what's actually happening at some points. Might just have been me that was missing details from the skim-reading. Other people can confirm or deny that. Grammar was about average. 4.5/5.
- A V DalcourtRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Style: The writer is direct in their story telling, layering in world building through minimal exposition and largely through dialogue-based backstory. It’s a light read with super short chapters that’s makes the sense of progression through this epic story feel lightning fast.
Story: Lindley is the son of a powerful mage and monk, descended from the God-King of the realm. When one of the pretenders to the throne decides to end the old king’s lineage, he sends a dragon riding necromancer to demolish the village where the descendants are said to live. Lindley survives a chance encounter with this dastardly villain, awakening his magical abilities in the process. Upon returning home with the intend to warn the village, but mostly his family, he finds nothing but the chard remains. With a promise for vengeance, Lindley set out to right a tremendous wrong.
Character: We’ve had several characters introduced and promptly ended, making me nervous in developing any sort of opinion on anyone but Lindley, our lead protagonist. I don’t really know what to say about Lindley apart from he’s standard hero fair. A lot of the challenges the writer establishes for him is often swept away in if not the same chapter or in the very next chapter. After a while it starts to feel like plot armor. I expect Lindley to overcome, but so far, it’s just been convenient. As an example, We start out with Lindley confessing that he will never be a mage. In the same chapter, his magical abilities awaken (leading to the drips of Lit RPG elements). Honestly, I was looking forward to the promises that his abilities would be awakened eventually… I just wasn’t expecting it so soon. Beyond out MC, we’ve just met an alcoholic knight who just delivered a ton of mythological backstory explaining our MC’s quest. The surviving characters are interesting enough to make me curious about who they are. But there’s no way I’m getting attached to the knight! Fool me once!
